Ever considered how much energy & money it wastes?
Computers and computer monitors in the United States are responsible for the unnecessary production of millions of tons of greenhouse gases every year, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. In U.S. companies alone, more than $1 billion a year is wasted on electricity for computer monitors that are turned on when they shouldn't be.

EPA officials say emissions could be drastically reduced if companies and individual computer users would follow a few energy-saving guidelines. NPR's Chris Arnold reports.

Why leave it on when you are asleep?
One desktop computer left on all day for one year can result in more than 1500 pounds of CO2 being released into the atmosphere. It would take 100 to 500 trees to offset that amount of extra CO2.
A desktop computer left on all day will cost between $115 and $160 a year to power.
My energy use is so small. Does it really make a difference?

This is a common attitude that adds up to trillions of watts of wasted energy each year, resulting in trillions of pounds of unnecessary greenhouse gas emissions.
More.

Although I agree I still do it quite often, if I'm downloading any big patch/demo/beta/etc files then I leave it on over night, I blame my useless internet connection.

I do turn my monitor off whenever I'm not using it though.

I leave it on all the time.

If you know what you are doing and know what's going on; you have nothing to worry about. But for the average user; perhaps shut off your PC or disconnect physically.

Keep in mind start/powering off does more wear and tear to your HDD more than leaving it on.

No I don't leave it on overnight. No reason to unless I'm downloading an absolutely huuuuge file.  I leave it on during the day and turn off the monitor.  My computer's sleep function doesn't work very well.  Too sensitive and keeps turning right back on.

I believe the best option other than just turning your PC off is to "hibernate" it...

by this I mean feed it lots and lots and then bury it under a pile of leaves for the winter, all the fans will then slow down and it will enter a extremely low power consuming state.....

Welp, theres pros and cons of turning off your computer all the time. Turning it off saves on emissions, while at the same time, the thermal cycling of the parts(cpu, gpu, and psu) Makes the parts wear out alot quicker. The parts expand and contract too offten resulting in premature failures. Kind of like a chick teasing you all day and then expecting it to last over 2 minutes LMAO.  Computers are designed to run 24/7 most efficiently.

But i agree on shutting down, i do every night, Unless i was folding, but gave that up.

No, if I forget it hibernates. That's too much juice to be left on. Leaving your PC on cuts the life of the components down. A hard drive will only spin for so long. It's bad enough with this card in here when, I turn it on and the street lights dim. .

NEGATIVE! Wrong. But remember, thats why theres Power management features in windows control panel. Ask any Tech worth his weight in salt if The constant cycling of the CPU and GPU being heated up and then  Drastically and sudddenly cooled down(shut totally off) doesnt shorten the life by a good percent. Thats one of the first things you learn in Tech school.

If i intend to leave mine on all the time i have the HDD and monitor set to shut down in 30 minutes. The rest stays at Idle.

I Leave it on, I always turn off the monitor though when i'm not using it.

I just dont feel like waiting 5 minutes in the morning so that my computer can start up..

Its REALLY REALLY slow..

Go to your power options and set it to stand by, it wont be as bad as a full boot.

I shut everything off at night. I once tried keeping just my comp on and not shutting it down for about a week, before I knew it the power supply was shot (lucky I had a spare at the time).

Mine WAS worse than that. Took about 5 mins to start up, then 10 mins to log in and get everything ready.

Now, with my new system, I start up and log in in about 3 minutes.

Lol, if you think you would like to give me a "tech" lesson I'm all ears. It all depends on how long the intervals are in between use. Of course constant booting is stressful to th machine however leaving a machine on for extended periods of time is also detrimental. At no point in my post did I mention a "constant cycle" of shutting down and booting up.This is why you have different power options to suit your needs. I guess you missed the part where I said I have my system set to Hibernate.
