I don't see how you can compare them, they're so damn different.
All I can say is one way you can compare hem - Directors, and god knows how George Lucas would have fucked up the Lord of the Rings if he had directed it instead of Peter Jackson.
I think that the idea of the Star Wars is a cooler concept, I mean who wouldn't want a lightsaber? The Lord of the Rings films were done better 100x than George and his blue screen.

The only thing that ruined starwars for me was Jar Jar and a wierd little kid in 7th Grade who collected SW Figurines *shudder...*
Lord of the Rings was definitally better in all aspects, SW went down hill after a bazzillion effects were applied to every movie.
Oh, but atleast the first movie of Star Wars didn't SUCK DONKEY DICK. Fellowship was fucking boring. Plus, I hate the way Frodo is presented as a character. I was expecting more of a sneaky fellow than a fucking timid queer.

I'd go with Star Wars over LOTR.
I think a lot of that is to do with me growing up with the Star Wars films though (although Jedi was the only one I actually saw in the cinema first time round and I don't remember that (I was quite young at the time)). If I were a kid today I could quite easily imagine myself prefering LOTR which is another great trilogy.
Apparently Peter Jackson won't be directing the Hobbit. Some dispute about DVD royalties he hasn't been paid.

Lucas has been relatively sucessfull with fantasy type settings. I liked Willow (even if it was a bit silly - it had midgets, always a recipe for success).
He did Indiana Jones too, so ultimately he is responsible for 2 of the greatest trilogies ever, good work George.
