I'm going to be starting my first build soon, and i'd like to get some recommendations on what good mobo's i should  be looking at.

this comp insn't for me, i'm basically building a budget gaming pc for a family member.

i am going to be putting together an amd/nvidia rig. running pc3200 ram (184 pin, 400 mhz), with a 939 pin processor. i am building it to last, so i'd rather not have chipset fans that'll just fail in a month on the mobo if i don't have to.

any ideas?

Go for this one....not too pricey and has a lot of good reviews

first i wouldnt go with AMD right now, dont get me wrong all my rigs are amd. but im fixin on building a conroe rig next month

get the E6400 and an asus board, go to new egg and look around a bit. you said you where ona  budget, and you wont get more back for your buck then that pair. the only pricey part is gonna be the memory , decent psu etc.

you mightaswell go conroe

DDR 1 prices are almost the same now as DDR2 prices anyway, so i wouldnt waste my money on old tech

the DFI is a good board, but if its for a friend they arnt exactly user friendly to get going, and can be very tempermental with memory selection

thanks for the recommendations.

by budget i mean really on budget. i dont plan on getting a processor better than a athlon 64 3500+.  so if i can use a little older tech, that still works fine, i think i'm going to go that route.
