So what is the point of NATO if most of the countries just stand back and watch the few do all the dirty work.

The only point of NATO is for the US to keep it's foot in the door (so to speak) of European security policy. There is no need for NATO and has been no need for NATO since the collapse of the USSR. The US are the ones who want to keep NATO going so they have a say in security policy of the largest economic power in the world, the EU.

The EU have put forward the idea of an EU force to replace NATO, but the Pentagon have always vehemently opposed such an action. It will probably (hopefully) happen in time though.

I just read that some Pakistani leaders have asked NATO to just concede to Taliban victory in Afghanistan and start trying to accept and work with their leadership after removing the US planted leader (Hamid Karzai).

I think NATO should demand that US forces redeploy from Iraq into Afghanistan and fight the fight themselves.

Typically when you have a fundamental change in the mission of a given IGO you would see the end of that organization:

Terminaiton of IGOs:

By operation of a rule of international law
i.    Impossibility of performance (e.g., disappearance of some object central to its operation) – NATO should   have died when Greece and Turkey fought, both were memberes
ii.    Fundamental change of circumstances making objective of organization moot – NATO its purpose was to defend west from WARSAW pact, but now peace keeping force
iii.    Emergence of new peremptory norm (nothing can violate jus cogens)

So i must ask why do we still have NATO? Well you be the judge...
