This thread is going to be very painful over the next 7 weeks but I knew it was going to go that way when I started it.

I take your point but until you get the urn with the ashes inside England are still laughing.  Even if it is for only 6 more weeks.

while its good we got the win, i tread to adelaide with trepidition.

Remember last Ashes? kicked 'em in the first, then came home without the Little Urn.

EDIT for post below mine:  THAT VB AD IS UNREAL!  Of course the reason we lost the last ashes was because none of our boys had moe's.

The difference between Aussies and English is simple.  Our players are ALL simply too skillful.....now i know that sounds incredibally arrogant, but wot i mean is; England has Flintoff, Australia has 12 Flintoff's.

Big deal, we have to let them win the Ashes every 20 years or so otherwise it gets boring.

BTW, any of you guys been catching the Vic Bitter ad??? It's fuckin hilarious!

Yeah, the VB ad is gold. As a question for the other Aussies - wtf did Ponting decide against forcing the follow-on? What kind of pussy tactic was that?

Suspect that the training accident where McGrath slipped on discarded balls can now be easily explained - he found Ponting's...

There are three reasons why Ponting didn't enforce the follow on, the first being the most likely of the thre.

1. Early in his captaincy days in a test in India Ponting enforced the follow on, and India went on to whoop us in the 2nd Inning, since then Ponting has never called the follow on, he'd rather bat again.

2. As McGrath said, it would've been easier to bowl them out with more cracks in the pitch on day 5 then on day 3, another reason why they didn't go for the follow on.

3. If Australia did enforce the follow on the match would've been over early in Day 4. Cricket Australia would have been forced to refund thousands of tickets to Day 5, a LOT of lost revenue.

It's a shame it was over so fast today...

I was at school today and went to Chemistry hoping to see the tail end crumble (yes, we were watching TV in class:D). I asked one of my mates what the score was, but he said "We've already won. It happened when we were in maths."

Also, I've now stickied this topic!

FINE - probably right. Although winning by 300 AND an innings would have been the way to go.

As partial rebuttal...
1. Find a better set of circumstances than day 3 and 500 runs lead to force a follow on.
2. The cracks on day 2 had McGrath bowling deflection like Warney - they couldn't possibly get bigger for day 5.
3. Um...no, I got nothing here - this is completely true. Although don't they normally bundle day 5 tix with other days? or just open the gates free on day 5 if they expect it to finish before midday?

In any case - nice response.

Just as Id predicted except for the follow on, thats suprised us all.

The ball turned for KP and Giles on the 1st day so it was always going to turn on day 4, imagine what Warney would of done day 5 if given the chance.

Flintoff says a few of them were nervous but it's ok they know what to expect next match.  WTF? You knew what to expect this match.  England form in ODI's is poor but they are one of the best test sides going.  If you bat like it's a ODI in a test match this is what will happen.

So as Duncan Fletcher (eng coach) you have to do something.  Harmison gives you 4 balls to whack out of every 6, the other 2 you simply cant reach, Anderson gives you about 2 balls every over to do what you want with.  Hoggard is ok if it swings, if it dosent you can do what you like with him aswell.  One of them has to go, Monty has to play.  I'd pull Anderson out of the team from Monty.  Anderson almost ended up playing for my county in Sept as he'd been out injured all season, he could get a game for Lancs.  He hasnt played much cricket since maybe just a few odi's.  Harmison, can be the best bowler in the world, when he wants to be. He was on the hard pacey wickets vs the West Indies a few years back.

England, sort the basics out, pick shot selection better and dont let the Aussies have any freebies to hit where they want to. Its called a Test for a reason and so far its only Freddie that has tested the Aussies.  f you can bowl well consistantly from both ends for periods of the game you will take wickets. Take 20 and you win the test.

yeh those poms got owned.

btw I was lucky enough to score a ticket in the players family section (later found out it was Mrs Flintoff's seat) with 3 mates - we had Pieterson's fiancee behind us and Leisel Jones in front, and walked past the England players box every time we went to toilet/food etc. Was only 1 metre away from Freddie Flintoff himself at one point! So yeh, I had a good weekend...

Ive had encounters with various cricketers in my time.  Opened the bowling vs Matthew Maynard (current coach, ex eng player) got smashed everywhere.  Hit Adrain Dale to the groundsman tractor 3 balls on the trot (he was just a county player) but my biggest claim to fame calling Mike Gatting a "Fat C*unt" along with "Catch me if you can ya fat bastard".  I was playing football on a sports field nd he drove his car through it, the wind caught my football, hit his windscreen (no damage caused), he stopped got out and gestured to me as he did in Pakistan all those years ago.  He couldn't of caught me even if he tried.

Gattings shock on his face looked just like this.  Warney's first bowl on british soil.
