So why are they ok to kill, but not dolphins?
are you serious?

#1 and formost, they are endangered, we endanger ending their species forever by 'hunting' them.

Cows, pigs, turkey's, we breed them, they are not endangered.

seriously, a little bit of common sense.

Could we not breed dolphins if we wanted?  I do not agree with the video, but other cultures eat dogs, which are intelligent, and are pets to many cultures.  Who chooses what animals to protect?

I wish we could, if we could and did, i wouldnt have nearly as big as a problem with the japanese and their yearly dolphin hunt.  Billions is being spent on research and 'environment protection and welfare' so i think if it was possible to breed them easily we would have, and perhaps not even having this conversation. [im not a marinebiologist or dolphin expert, i just read the newspapers, and watch the news]

Im not one for trolling forums, though thought the above may stem the tide of abuse and stoopid remarks.

Yes.  But what about people who hunt ducks or other animals?  Where is the outcry for them?  There is none.  Hell, we even have a huge store, Gander Mountain, dedicated to hunting animals not needed for food.

I really can't answer that.  I'm not quite sure myself, but as ozghost said, we as humans tend to feel closer to animals similar to us.  I personally believe dolphins are the most beautiful and intelligent animals on Earth, but everyone is entitled to their own opinion.  I'm sure many others disagree with me, but this is how I stand.

I think a simple rationale to defend dolphins is the endangered idea.  If we can logically say a species is nearing extinction relative to other species in its ecosystem, then yeah, it makes sense that hunting practices should be limited (if allowed at all) on the species in question.  It's just a matter of environmental upkeep.

When hunting ducks, deer, or whatever, the goal is always a humane kill.  That means quick as possible.  That is the goal.  Doesn't always happen, but at least we try.  What the Japanese do here is not a humane kill.

And I love to eat the food I kill.  Needed, NO.  Wanted, Yes.  Ever been to a slaughter house?  I'd rather be killed by a hunter.

This is a 'traditional' Japanese event that has only recently come to my attention.
First off, I am more-or-less an ecology nut, I'm a member of Greenpeace, (but only because I was cornered by an attractive young hippy with a clipboard and a sign up sheet. I signed up thinking it'd be easy to drop out later,) but my facts here are 100% true and not exaggerated at all for effect.

Annually in a lot of Japanese fishing communities, namely Taiji and Futo there is a "Dolphin Drive" in which pods of Dolphins are driven int shallow water and killed with knives and clubs. Generally the ones not hposted out of the water and dragged away to be slaughtered die of blood loss in the water. Fot most others, a rope is tied around their tails and they are hoisted out of the water. As Dolphins weigh approximately 360 KG out of the water, this process literally rips their backbones apart. This of course does not kill them, and they are dragged to makeshift tents/slaughterhouses to suffocate or be bled to death. The very few survivors left in the bloody shallows are bought by marine parks and zoos.

This had been said as a traditional and culteral activity by the Japanese officials. It is true that the Japanese hunted marine mammals in modest numbers in the past, and after he economic devistation after WWII, the occupying US forces suggested that they again hunted marine mammals for food. This eventually turned into the commercial hunting of marine mammals.
The 'tradition' argument is very poor on these grounds, and even if it is considered tradition, it's a brutal one which people should get over. It has no benefit to anyone as Dolphin meat is generally disliked by the Japanese, it is mostly used in fertilizer and pet food. There is not one Japanese resteraunt with Dolphin meat on the menu.

The fact remains that the process used is exptreamly cruel - most likely it is the most inhumane thing on the whole planet. Most people would argue that killing animals with the proven intelligence and social sructure of Dolphins is wrong no matter how one goes about it.
I have a video here narrated by Joaquin Phoenix which shows some pretty graphic images of this process, do not watch if you don't want to, it is pretty nasty.

I agree with the rest of the post, but calling dolphin clubbing the most inhumane thing on the whole planet is a bit of a stretch. If I lacked a single tactful bone in my body I could post a link to a mass execution and beheading, graphic with sound and closeups, that makes me sick to my stomach to even think about. I'd rate that a bit more inhumane than killing dolphins.

However, yeah, what they do is completely unnecessary.

usmarine2005 I kind of get your point, but I'm not arguing tat killing/eating animals is wrong. You saw the video, (and I'm glad you disagree with it,) and it's fairly obvious the this show of brutality is far worse than the systematic and quick deaths of livestock, (e.g., farmed for their produce, in this case meat,) which in all likelyhood don't even realise what's happening.

- While a cow may see another cow being killed, there is no feeling towards the dead cow. Dolphins howeve have social structure and do have relationships between mother and child and most likely other members of the pod. Think of the Nazi death camps, the feelins those people felt were probably very similar to the dolphins, except the Nazis, (believe it or not,) had more humane methods.

- Dolphins are very rarely used for food. It is unattractive which is why the meat is mislabled as whale meat. There is no point for the killing of them in the first place.

- Hunting animals like ducks or deer has had its outcries, especially when the animal is not used for food, (trophy heads.) in general these animals are used for food though. Also the scale is important. When someone gos to shoot a duck or a deer they generally don't herd all avaliable animals into an area and butcher them.

@ Not, 'inhumane' dosn't apply stronger when aplied to Humans, inhumane applies to all animals equally. If you were to cut a person's ear off for the means of toprture, it would be equally as inhumane as cutting a dog's ear off. A beheading is quick death when compared for being stabbed, having your backbone ripped apart, being dragged along a road, and being stabbed, bled and suffocated until you die. Just my opinion of course.

Whale meat is considered inferior to beef by the Japanese.

Beef is basically a delicacy in Japan.  Whale meat is more commonplace, and I would assume that it's easier to pass off dolphin meat as whale than as beef.
