For those of you that were paying close attention, Fancy put up a thread about the guy who played Kramer flipping out and using the "n" word.  Not surprisingly, the thread was completely deleted...

I understand the mods' motivation for that, but still...  isn't it sad that a word still holds that kind of power over our society?  Isn't it sad when a racist says that word that we can't even acknowledge or discuss its implications?  We've become such a legalistic and politically correct society that we have to pretend that the word only exists in rap songs and is only acceptable for a black person to say.

Imagine how silly it would be if "cracker" gained this status in our society.

What do you guys think about all this?

Agreed. +1

The term is extremely offensive but why did anyone feel the compulsion to delete said thread? Especially given that the thread was quite obviously a criticism of the person saying the word. Is it a case of: if we never hear the word then no-one ever says it and by default we live in a racially egalitarian paradise? It's like the banning of the swastka in the likes of Germany and Austria. What purpose does that serve? What's so bad about confronting shameful things?

I think its ridiculous that it holds so much power.  I also think its ridiculous that it is only acceptable for blacks to say to each other.

On the other hand, you will find some black people that will take the word offensively, but also say that there is a difference between blacks and "n"'s.  It also sucks that Im afraid of actually typing out the full word because a mod will take it offensively and remove my post, thus not letting everyone see my opinion.

Agreed on all accounts...  but yeah, I guess the mods deleted it because some people are so stupid that they might get worked up over the post and harass the site owners about it.

I really do wish America took the tone of "Fuck off" to whiners more often.  It would thicken their skin.

It's just not a good topic on an "all ages" forum. We also probably shouldn't talk about child porn, beastiality, rape, and/or conspiring to commit murder.

Why go there? I think everyone already agrees that these topics are best left for other websites, not this one.

Which are not offenses equal, in my eyes to use of the 'n' word. Hell, I can say shit, fuck, damn, slam religion, slam non-religion, ridicule nationality and be sarcastic beyond all restraint...but god forbid that I or anyone else use the word restricted for internal black culture-use only. It is, in my mind, one of the heights of hypocrisy in the world, but not a matter to get too pissed off about.

That being said, this isn't really a public forum, and participation is granted on the terms that rules are followed. I haven't read the rules beyond a quick glance, but instead operate under the principle that if I have to ask, I won't do it. If the mods want to shut down a thread because they think it's offensive, irrelevant or completely unfunny, it's their call. A regular user really has no right or reason to complain about it.

I agree that it's hypocrisy in America (and probably elsewhere but I can't speak for other countries).

Perfect example: My best friend is half white, half black. I can barely get away with singing lyrics to rap songs that use the "N" word. It's not like he's gonna beat me up over it, it just kinda pisses him off. The difference here in topics that I listed above is that a) Slavery is not that old, and b) Slavery was fucked up and in some ways, I think we do owe it to black people to back off the racist shit for a while. I'm sure some day it will dwindle but a lot of people who are still alive today, remember what it was like when racism wasn't just a joke.

I disagree.  The mods do have a right to close threads as they please, but I also have the right to complain about it.  Besides, it's not like I'm bitching people out.  I'm bringing up a legitimate point.  Complaints can be constructive.

We're so sensitive about it, because, as mr. Ihaveadancingcatforasig said, it's not very old.... our grandparents and great grandparents, and great great grandparents were directly influenced by slavery and racism.  Hell, even the baby boomers went through the civil rights act and stuff.

Once it goes from a "Grandparents" to "Ancestors" kinda thing, I think it will be easier to forget and people will be more open.  But complete racial segregation was around only 40 years ago, and I think a lot of white people forget that sometimes.....

Yes, but for black people to use the term and expect white people to just ignore it, that's just a dumb idea.  If it's not ok for a white person to say it, then no one should be able to say it.

NC isn't the most progressive state in the world, but if you're implying that I'm racist, you're quite mistaken.

NC is a fun state and if you want to see some racial stuff happening come on over to WNC, I've got some black friends that are as country as me and they have rebel flag tattoos bc we researched some real truths of the past in the south

Interesting...  yeah, I went to college in Asheville.  There's a black guy who dresses up as a Confederate that marches around that area.  He's an interesting guy.

My stance on the history of the South is an unusual one, but I definitely thought what Lincoln did was ultimately worse than the continuance of slavery.
