Profiling is a tricky topic. Naturally, I'm against unfair discrimination, but I'm also aware of the trade law enforcement employ in the form of profiling. It's not like cops sit around and think up reasons to invade civil rights, harass, or discriminate people. They have a job to do and it requires complex strategies, critical thinking, and it demands results. If a "majority" (more than 50% of a group) is known for doing certain criminal activity then yes, it may be wise to "carefully" assume things. If that majority is creeping into the higher % brackets, then yes, it's even moreso appropriate to assume things. If candy bar theft is being carried out by fat white men 90% of the time, then guess what, it's becoming a science that fat white man steal candy bars.
Part of doing this profiling correctly includes carrying with your assumption a degree of diplomacy, delicacy, and tact...because there's still a chance that you're wrong.
On the other hand, and this is even more difficult to work with, is NOT being offended for being profiled. I know it's easier said than done, especially when the offending officer is not being delicate or tactful. But guess what, he's doing it to protect YOU too!
And somewhat on the subject of being offended, it actually is in OUR power to NOT BE OFFENDED. It's a choice. Nobody can force you to be offended. Sure it takes a degree of self mastery and a high degree of self worth..but you can actually be free of offense. It's a religious teaching and it's practiced in sectarian and professional circles.

I can't think of any terror attacks by Americans on foreign soil. I do see how that is an issue. I thought there were more domestic flights within the US than international flights (and even if I'm wrong, there are a lot of domestic flights). The fact that American terrorists, of which there are many, conduct their attacks on US soil. Non have involved planes so far, but after 9/11 it can't be ruled out.Locoloki wrote:

There have been far more domestic terror attacks in the US than terror attacks of foreign origin.

Three queues -
1) Jews: walk straight through
2) Gentiles (i.e., me): interrogation, cross-questioning at length, strip search, full luggage ransack, swabs for explosives, confiscation of items that could not fully be confirmed as safe (like my travel iron!!) and friendly 'tourism' personal questionnaire in the departure lounge (which included the questions, "How much did you spend here?", "Did you visit the West Bank or Gaza Strip?", "What do you think of Israelis?" and "Do you believe in a two-state solution to the Palestinian question?").

Nationality (countries suspected of being terrorists training grounds or where suspects had made a transit)
Travelling in pairs or more in business/first class, all tickets purchased from the same source
In all of my visits to the US, my passage through security has not been one without a full bag search.
And if you see "SSSS" anywhere on your boarding pass, you are screwed. It isn't random for foreigners despite them telling you that. I know because all my boarding passes had SSSS on it and one of my friends (who travelled separately from us) did not. I was subjected to full search, while he went through like any other traveller despite being a foreigner.

All of the examples you cite are where a crime has been committed and the manner in which it was committed is used to find a criminal. If we start profiling people all that will happen is that terrorist organisations will find people who don't fit the profile, knowing that they won't be checked.kr@cker wrote:
