It helps if you put in a price range, and the ports that you have on your PC.  Just for grins, the Nvidia 8800 is nice.

I am going to send an army of lolcats.com to steal your video card.

If it's not an 8800 then it's gonna be a waste of time in the long term IMO, you'll just be wanting to upgrade again soon enough.

Start -> Run -> DXDIAG -> OK -> go to 'Display' -> and give us the 'Name' in the 'Device' box.

The best way to do this is open up your case and look (as certain entities just love shaving slots and sockets off):
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/f/fc/PCIExpress.jpg/800px-PCIExpress.jpg
Top to bottom: PCIe 4x, PCIe 16x, PCIe 1x, PCIe 16x, PCI

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/d/d1/AGP_slot.jpg/800px-AGP_slot.jpg
Top to bottom: AGP, PCI, PCI

Your motherboard's configuration may vary.

If you just have PCI or ISA slots, then your computer is either sorely out-of-date or should only be used as a server. If your computer has an AGP slot, then you're probably best off with an upgrade or, failing budget, an ATI Radeon X850 Pro 256MB. If you have a PCI-e video card, then chances are it's fairly advanced and you're better off waiting for 8800-type cards to drop in price.

Depends on the budget, noob.

OK.

Start -> Run -> DXDIAG -> OK -> go to 'Display' -> and give us the 'Name' in the 'Device' box.

That'll let us know what you have already and if getting a better AGP card would be worth the price.

Pretty much. Sounds like your system is going to be gasping its last breaths at the end of the year, as far as next-gen software is concerned. The ~$120 'ATI Radeon X850 Pro' from www.newegg.com could breathe some life into it, depending on how much RAM you have. 1GB is acceptable. 2GB is recommended. However, your system, like mine, is probably at the end of its upgrade rope.

That's a good thing; that card is the best price/performance available for AGP. If you were to buy a $200+ video card, you'd ultimately be cheating yourself as a PCI-e system would grant you far better performance. Don't be fooled by the X1600 option either, as the quality of its memory pales in comparison to the X850's.

I recommend either the Radeon X850 Pro if you're on a budget, or a new system entirely if you are not. Multiple threads exist as to the latter.

The card isnt everything.  If you want to be on max with out lag your gonna need 2 gb of ram.
