Its labelled backwards.  The bow is the front, towards the flight deck spawn.  Look at the Hanagar Bay labels and you will see.  And its not a carrier but an amphious ship.

Then some idiot will drive it off the map or into the land. Thats why they didnt put that into the game.

Hit the "enter vehicle" key next to the switch. There are a few other elevators in other levels too

There's a simple way to prevent that... just code "no-go" zones as you approach the shore or the edge of the map where the ship will crawl to a halt unless you put it in reverse, or turn it around (or lock the controls, and auto-pilot you away).  The two reasons I'm glad they don't move is a) with two players manning the weapons systems, and a third driving, they US would be even more overpowering on Wake Island...  you could attack every single checkpoint with it, and b) it'd be hell on the pilots trying to find the thing to reload/repair.

Well, at least your part-right.  The Essex is a Wasp Class Amphibious Assault Ship, LHD-2 (LHD = Landing, Helicoptor, Dock).  They're FAR smaller than true aircraft carriers, and have far different capabilities.  But the "fore" and "aft" labels for the hangar bay are correct.  The flight deck spawn is towards the aft of the ship (easily identified by the well deck at the stern).   The bow is fore, the stern is aft.  Another easy way to tell is that as far as I know every aircraft carrier we've ever built had the island positioned on the starboard side (right, when facing the bow).  Well... except some of the earlier ones which were converted from something else, like a battleship, and had no island.

Either way, I was VERY dissapointed with this map...  I want a job as a researcher there, because you can just make crap up.

First...  the Apache is an Army helicoptor (well... this goes for all maps), so you would never see it on the deck of the Essex (well... it could operate there, but it just wouldn't happen... no one in the Navy nor Marine Corps are trained to maintain nor fly that equipment, and there are no Navalized variants of the Apache).  Of course, you can say the same for their "Blackhawk" flub.  Basically, they modeled a Blackhawk, gave it the paint job of a Seahawk, called it a Blackhawk, and put Marines in it.  It would have been far more appropriate for them to have modeled a Marine Huey (which are far from obsolete... they even have a new Navy variant in development, to begin delivery in 2007).  Aside from Hueys and Cobras, the Marines use two other hilos (neither in the game), the CH-53 Sea Stallion (which is the largest single-main-rotor helicoptor in the world), and the CH-46 Sea Knight (it's basically a smaller version of the Army CH-47 Chinook, looks like a banana with a rotor on each end).  Now, the Blackhawk is Army...  and the Navy uses a different H-60 variant, the Seahawk.  From the paint job (the greys, with "Navy" on the side), it's supposed to be an SH-60 Seahawk... but the tail gear is in the wrong location.  The tail gear is that far back for the UH-60 Blackhawk and the MH-60 Pavehawk (Air Force), and maybe some other specialized variants.  The Navy's version has several differences, some of which are major.  The most visible to me is the location of the tail gear, which is much farther forward on the Seahawk.  The reason for that of course is that the Navy's version needed a hinged tail, so it can fold up for tighter shipboard storage.  It also needs some modifications to the transmission and other mechanical and electrical systems to withstand the constant exposure to ocean spray and the salty sea air.  The Coast Guard also has the HH-60 Jayhawk... which is likely pretty much a Seahawk with a different paint job (but they would use the Navy's version, less because of the storage needs, more because of the maritime use), and I have noticed the tail gear on the Jayhawk is located forward also... so it can likely fold up (though it's not like they have aircraft carriers in the Coast Guard, lol).  Then of course... any Seahawk on an LHD would be operated by the Navy for anti-submarine warfare, search and rescue, etc...   not for the actual beach assault mission (Marines are an odd bunch...  they want only to be flown by Marines, and to have air-support from Marines... it's a jarhead thing, I guess...  and of course the Navy, to them, is just a taxi service).

Second...  they have F-18's on the Essex.  That is a MAJOR no-no.  Now, technically you can call a big-deck amphib a "carrier"...  but it can't operate modern military jets except for 2...  the AV-8B Harrier II, and the soon-to-be F-35B "Whatever"...  and ONLY that variant, you won't catch an F-35A (Air Force), or even the Navy's F-35C on the Essex (neither of which are STOVL, even though the Navy's variant is the most expensive of the three, at 48 million a pop).  You won't catch any other fixed-wing aircraft on that ship, because it's not capable of operating them (*maybe* old WWII planes... because LHD's are almost as big as old WWII carriers... for instance the USS Lexington, used from 1941 to 1991 was 888 feet long, Wasp Class ships are 844 feet long).  LHA's, LHD's, and the soon-to-be LHA(R)'s have neither catapults, nor arrestor cables, both of which are needed to operate F-18's on a ship.  Basically... I don't know how they managed to get F-18's on that ship (well yeah... the just put the model there)... but they're going to need blow-torches and cranes to get them back off again (or some really crazy pilots to taxi them over the edge, and try to bail out, lol).  They also have WAY too many of them on there as well.  An LHD wouldn't carry more than 6 Harriers unless it was on some sort of sea control mission (IE: not storming a beach), it would have far more CH-53's and CH-46's.  These ships, except for a few odd Harriers, carry Marines and their boats and whirly birds.  To tell you the truth, I really don't think they should have F-35B's on the Essex...   from what I've read, though it's not explicitly stated, they'll likely only be deployed on the new class being developed, as the operation of F-35Bs and MV-22's (Ospreys) is a part of its design parameters (the LHARs are a good 60 feet longer than LHDs...  LHAR is "LHA Replacement", LHA is basically the older Tarawa Class big-deck, "Landing, Helicoptor, Assault"...  my dad served aboard LHA-5, the Peliliu for a West Pac tour...  brought home some Persian rugs bought in Hong Kong, and some trinkets bought on the famed gold markets in Dubai, UAE... and a hat from Phuket, Thailand *snickers*... I know it's pronouned "foo ket", but I can't help but think "fuck it").

when was your dad on the Peleliu... or As I and many others called it Target number 5... the marines referred to it as Hotel Number 5.. cause they just sat around cleaned their guns... exercised and took up alot of the weight room... And watched porn....alot..

As an Electronics Technician, I was stationed there from 97-01 when I left the Navy to persue a career in computers... now persuing a higher calling...

I used to always want to design a Counterstrike map or something following the ships design... but was always too busy to do it.

Anyways I you appear to know alot about the technicalities of the designs of aircrafts and ship carrying capacities...

I would have rather seen L-Cac's or LCU's as the deploying vehicles from ships.. even carrying a vehicle or two in it... such as tanks and humvee's  but then i figured that might get too complicated...

OMG... no F-18's!
https://www.navsource.org/archives/10/10080208.jpg
Now, you can surely spot the Cobras and the tails of the Harriers at the aft of the deck.  All the rest of those are Sea Knights and Sea Stallions, except there does appear to be one single Navy Seahawk Port-side center, folded up.

OMG... Hueys!

Note, this isn't the Essex, it's the newest LHD, the Iwo Jima (LHD-8 is under construction).

I love that map! That's my new favorite map (if I'm US anyways)! I love how now THEY actually have to come to you. Insteed of those other maps on BF2 where YOU started out on the Carrier and had to come to them.
I own with the PKM on that map!

He was an ATC at the time, I'm thinking '95-'96, and has since made E8.  Not sure if he taught any classes for ETs, but he was an instructor at NATTC when it was in Millington '89-'93, and is there again, with it being in Pensacola... though he hates it now.  Whatever his billet is, he's basically a QA guy in charge of ensuring uniform training... but aparently he has nothing to do, because since Ivan the Navy freaked out and started moving things around to different sites, and so basically what he's in charge of monitoring is somewhere else, lol.

Well... I know the basics of what things can, and are supposed to do...  any specific figures, and I just know how to Google, lol.  Though... the Lexington is pretty dear to me... dad was on her I think '86-'89... fuzzy on the start date because he did shore duty at NAS Pensacola, then sea duty on the Lex, in Pensacola, so we didn't have to move for 7 years.  He was Petty Officer of the Year for the Lex in '89, then made Chief, and I got to go on a couple Tiger cruises, I was maybe 10-11 when we did those, the first year was P'cola to New Orleans, and the next year was NOLA to P'cola.  But also, I'm a bit of an aviation buff (and ships too... when they concern aviation).

Yeah... I thought about that too, but aside from too much complexity, it's basically the same thing as CH-53's... it's just too big for the game.  A CH-53E could carry more than an entire team on a 64-player server.  A Sea Knight could do the same on a 32-player server.  That would be pretty funny though... someone taking off a Sea Stallion with the whole team, and a jet coming along shredding it up, and either getting 32 kills in one, or even funnier watching them all bail out at the same time.

Edit: 'I' before 'E', except after 'C'......

I must have played like 15 rounds on a 16-player Iron Gator map last night.  On 16-player, the other team sucked, so I just got a helluvalotta wins.  But by the end of my playing, it was so balanced, we'd just either duke it out in the mess hall, or the hangar bay.  It was really cool.  The 16 player map doesn't have a lift or anything, but it was SO much fun!

Got my copy of SF today and the first round was Iron Gator.
Man this map is so much fun that it already gets annoying again

The first round we´ve been spawncamped by two Hinds as our last flag was the Aussichtsplatform (the second flag on top of the carrier next to the flight deck).
The second round the MEC took over the Mess Hall and we were busy the whole round trying to recap it. Man that was fun! Talk about close quarters combat ^^ All the time either flashbangs or teargas so you couldn´t see anything ^^

Only problem was that for some reason I didn´t get any rewards except the flashbang badge although I had more than 20 kill both rounds

I can't play that map because I need more RAM. Inside the carrier my system does not allow fast turns and so you can kill me with the knive, I won't hit you.
But I love it. It's the only map wher you really have to show fast reactions and  where you don't know where the enemy is. Because of the different decks the UAV is useless and so you have to be carefull.
Ok, its not very realistic, but who cares under enemy fire?

The lifts are a great part of the map, and its really easy to hold the flag if all the enemy do is try to come down.  You just camp and wait for them as they come down, eithier laying C4 or a hail of fire, its great !
And about getting lost, your all right, its really hard to try and find your way around sometimes.  Asking for directions doesnt seem to work, its usually answered by a volley of fire.

What's SP?  Or do you mean SF?

Well... it's there, but there's no single-player map for it (which seems a bit of a rip).  But, if you want to take a look around without being on a server in a fight, go to multiplayer and start your own LAN server, and you can choose Iron Gator.  I did it the other night when my dad was here, so we could have a good laugh at how stupid EA is (F-18's on an amphibious assault ship... ROFL).
