Yes, the goverment does have a large ammount of control over the price. TBH I dont think we pay too much, it stops us wasting it. What fucks me off is you over there think its too much for you to pay. hense every single one of your industries and 99.99% of your transport systems are gas guzzling wastes of energy, with no regard for anything else in the world.
We have ethanol plants being built all over this country.  Many of our mass transit systems are converting to biodiesel.  Many city bussing systems and school bussing are switching to biodiesel.  You also know nothing about our Industries. We burn coal for alot of our power in the U.S. New technology has made these plants very clean compared to how coal was burned in the past for power.
Not even close to enough sorry but it's just nothing like what needs to be done.

All that aside. $6.12 per gallon = fair (thats cheap for the UK)

$2.50 per gallon = screaming waste me im an expendable fuel... USA needs taxing, and heavily.
$6.12 / gallon = being raped by your government and saying "Thank you sir may I have another"

$2.50 / gallon = high price and I will drive less because of it.

$1.50 / gallon = much more reasonable price.

At least in my area... after the elections they went from 2.37 to now around 2.52...  Are the prices going up in other places too?  Is there a reason why?  (besides the fact that the elections are over)
I think you give the Republicans WAY too much credit.  They can't possibly control a global market for a product that is very high demand.

It's all about global demand and refinery production.

Pretty typical and missing the point of heavy taxation completely.

Heavy taxation is often used for socialistic government to provide services to everyone -- in principle.  However, in practice, this usually means a large portion of the tax revenue is whisked away for the personal use of politicians and special interest groups.  This is why I support smaller government and lower taxes -- including less taxes on things like fuel.

Still, there is something to be said about encouraging more responsible consumption habits.

I just made a couple of words in your last quote bold faced and yellow to make my point.

One thing that it seems like you haven't considered in this statement is the sheer size of the US compared to the UK.  If the taxes here made the gas price $6.12 per gallon, you would essentially shut down interstate travel and the shipping industry.

Actually the reason i dont mind higher taxes is the fact that it makes you stop and think about the ammount of fuel your using. If fuel cost the same for me as it does for you id be drving an 8 litre sports car to london every day just coz i could.

Nothing to do with how the government spends the cash after, TBH they do a shit job at that and its a completely different matter.

Yeh the industries in the 2 countries aren't directly comparrable but, your economy could easily absorb a hefty tax increase, not to the same levels we have but still large enough to make you sit back and think about how much shit you're wasting, and stop you being go god damn dependant on such wasteful methods of energy production.

Or alternatively you might revive the railway industry.
