I have an idea about a new type of Debate for the D&ST, where one person challenges another to Debate on one specific topic, and they are the only two allowed to post. They can post up to 10 times each in a period of 1 day, and that's all. At the end of the Debate a poll will be posted and people will be able to vote for the winner. I accept suggestions on this, and even flaming.

An interesting idea, but the two users most be able to demonstrate some kind of background education or else you'll just have another petty flame war based on misinformation, like every other topic here. For example, most of you would resort to your usual "America is evil!!111" or "American is an empire boohoohoo" babble:

I would like to Debate with people with some background education as well. When you say "most of you would resort to your usual America is evil or else, you are just generalizing, most people here have never made such statement or suggested that.Fancy_Pollux wrote:

I give this idea about a 10% chance of success. If you could find two people that could sensibly debate a subject without personal attacks and flaming, you would still have to stem the tide/onslaught of the peanut gallery of members eager to chime in their sentiments about the current topics/flaming comments/personal attacks.
It might last for 1 hour before someone will spoil the thread and a mod will end up closing it. We have too many people who have no respect for another member telling them they cannot post in a thread. The self granted authority makes others react in a "haha I'm breaking your rules" kind of fashion.
The idea might be proposed to a higher authority to isolate a thread for this purpose. But when presented with the extra work that it would entail, my initial reaction was no.

I like the idea. I don't think the debate would turn into total flaming because the posters would know they had only 10 posts. Even if the debate did degenerate it would still work because then people would just vote for a winner between the two idiot flamers.

Generalizing? Nearly EVERY post on this forum has degraded into some sort of petty anti-America flame war. Even when the topic only hints at mentioning the word "America", people take it upon themselves to go off on a tangent about how much they hate it. That's not to say the other side is free from guilt, but an overwhelming majority of all posts here are anti-American. I think it's a nice idea. But unlikely to be workable. Maybe there should be some rules in place, like first one to mention America loses.
I don't think it would be right to ban someone for posting in a thread in a public forum. If two people want to have a serious debate, my recommendation would be for them to duke it out in PM's and post the results in a thread. Just make sure that both parties understand what is going on (ie.. public posting of PM's upon completion of debate, uncensored) This way you keep the debate closed from outside interference, yet still get the public's attention with the subject matter, points, and counter arguments.

The problem being that people are too extreme here, on both sides, and can't calm down enough to just talk about things (Spearhead).
It would however be interesting but I think that it won't help make any progress in debate, because too many people think that some left wing/right wing TP's or "sources" = truth. Both sides (but particularly the left) tend to only look at things from one side of the table. Can't stand that, its called, ignorance, but anyways I gotta run, good day ser.

Its sounds like a good idea Sergeriver. I see many debates start off amicably only for someone to step in, add nothing to the debate, just winge about how someones opinion is not aligned with their own, then someone takes exception and the flaming begins. This idea might allow the more discerning poster to get a chance to explain their thoughts without them being labeled Anti something or other before the debate even gets going.
