** ADDED YET ANOTHER FAN **
see bottom of post

I needed some extra cooling for my videocard, so I decided to add a second case fan to the window of my computer, to blow directly onto the videocard. Now, I know this isn't the prettiest thing in the world, it's not 100% perfect, but it does it's job...very well.

I added the bottom one.

It dropped the videocard board temps about 10*C, and dropped the GPU idle temp around 8 - 10*C, and dropped the GPU full-load temps 14*C!!

Very happy.

Pretty nice, but you know they sell these Video card coolers which sit just below your video card and blow direct air into it. takes up one slot and is around 10-20 bucks.

Bah, there cheap and usually loud, and no good on the SLI systems.

You did a great job, very clean!  Love it when people mod there cases.  I have put a dremmel to many of them

When you are feeling ambitious, your next project should be dual 120mm fans on the side.  Better CFM and it will be a ton quieter!

Good point, I have had one in my last three comp and only needs to use a can of dust off for the inside twice a year.  And that was a thin layer of dust I couldn't see.

Gotta clean the filters every few weeks.  Better then having that crap on your fans!

Nah, fan filters look ugly IMO and restrict too much airflow.

Dust isn't that much of a problem for me.

I'm well aware that they make videocard coolers. The one I'm looking at is the Zalman VF900, which is like 40$. This here was free.

That didn't turn out bad at all for you. I was thinking about doing the same thing, what did you use to cut into the glass? It looks like a box-cutter but I'm thinking that would shatter my glass or just scratch it.

If you think you're going to be doing more modding, it may be worthwhile to invest in a hole saw bit for your drill.  You can get them for 80, 92, and 120 mm size holes.  Much faster, and cleaner than trying to do it with a jig saw and/or dremel.

I think that it is more important to move the air across over the cards, rather than into. Channel the air.

I used an 1/8" Tungsten Carbide Cutter with my Dremel.

If anyone want's to do this, make sure you use masking tape. I put like three or four layers of masking tape on both sides of the plexiglass, and I put it so it overlapped eachother in a criss-cross. Masking tape helps even out the force of cutting it, to prevent cracking.

Also, GO SLOW! It took me like 5 or 10 minutes to cut that hole out, because I was going super slow. You don't want the plexi to crack.

I decided my hard-drive cooling needed a little work. So, I installed a 80mm front-bezel fan (completely hidden, and I have no pics of that...it's not very picture-worthy) and then I figured that wasn't good enough, so, I busted out the Dremel and hacked away.

This is what I got:

I cut that using only two cutting discs from a Dremel, and I smoothed it up and de-burred it with a sanding stone for a drill.

Togethor, the two fans have cooled my hard-drives around 8*C.

I have my side panel off.... with a nice little floor fan with a plastic shroud around it to direct the air.  Cools my whole PC.  Filter is a must though...  and or a compressor to clean the PC regularly.

You have a floor fan, that can ONLY suck air in. Okay, do you have ample exhaust to go with that? Cause you'd need a ****-load of exhaust to match the CFM of your average floor fan.

I gaurantee you'd have more efficient cooling, with less dust, if you put the sidepanel back on and did it up right.

Also, I'd be careful using that air compressor. Some air compressors shoot quite a bit of water out. Not a whole lot, but enough that it would definately ruin your computer. You're safest bet is to use some canned air from the store, though that gets kind of pricey.

If you're going to use the compressor, just make sure it's got fresh oil and that the oil level is correct.

stfu you fail
in that you should have more intake 3/5ths of exhaust to maintain air pressure and air compressors shoot out a negligible amount of moisture... and most water just stays at the bottom of the said tank... you woorry too much about the oil damn whens last time you used one 1950s?

A case fan blowing on the card dropped the tempt 10 celcius?

Bullshit. Maybe ambiest but no way in hell is that the core. As was said, get a filter or it's going to go up 20 celcius.

The videocard has a small heatsink/fan setup. The fan on it is very small and I don't believe it's real efficient, but the heatsink is about 3/4 the size of the card. My casefan is blowing a lot of air across that heatsink.

montypythizzle: Fine, use an air compressor. When you fry your computer, don't come crying to me.
