What sort of surround sound? It does make a difference.
You can expand any song into surround sound using filtering matrices like Dolby Prologic II. If you're trying to test a digital connection then you will probably be using either a Dolby Digital or DTS format. There can be issues with frequency with playback of DTS audio on PC and I don't know of any Dolby Digital (AC3) encoded music you could play.

Anyway, I'm sure this should be in Tech, not in D&ST. Maybe some clever mod will move it.....

There are CD's by Dolby and others that test sound/bass/surround sound/etc. But they're not free.

Did you soundcard not come with any software to test & configure speakers/settings?

That is not true 5.1, well I presume, vast majority of songs are not usually 5.1, many super audio CD's have proper 5.1, but couldnt you just use a dvd, in dolby digital or dts to do it?  Usually there is software wizard's to help you with the test that have a piece of sound for you to use so check that.
