At least 80 militants have been killed in an air strike by Pakistani forces on a madrassa (religious school) used as a militant training camp, the army says.

It would be nice for just one day to open BBC and reading about another topic besides the war in Middle East.

It reminds me of when the Troubles were in full swing here. Every morning you switch on the news 3 ppl murdered here, 4 ppl with multiple bullet wounds to the knees, it was the never ending story and it was unrelenting for 25years and we only have a population of 1.4million. It only stopped when the British Government and the Paramilitaries stopped for a moment blowing the shit out of each other and got diplomacy going. This war on terror shit is never going to be won through force, hearts and minds or shock and aw. Only through diplomacy.
What we don't see on our TV's is that the majority of the Pakistani ppl support the Taliban operations in Afghanistan and along the tribal lands of Pakistan and the government's support for the war on terror is tearing the place apart.

No, we can't ignore it.  That's why they closed our karma fest post.

Yes, diplomacy with those who want to kill you no matter what you do or say always works.  Our flowery words begging for peace will cause them to weep, lay down their AKs and suicide belts, and give us one big group hug and we will all put on Birkenstocks. *sniff*  NOT!  Lock n load!  Bullets are the only thing that will stop Jihad, not bs diplomacy with homicidal maniacs.  There's not much wiggle room in "convert or die" so we pick the 3rd option: sending them to see their maker as soon as possible.  God Bless America and the men and women of the US military.

Diplomacy, dishlomacy!! Why bother? Pull out. Concentrate on national security and missile shields and all that bullshit. Then you don't have to deal with the outside world!!! It is no-ones place to fuck around in the middle east, just like it's not the business of jihadists to fuck around in American airspace.

Isolationism would be nice, if it worked.  The rub is that the enemy still finds its way to you.  They'll still "fuck around in American airspace" even if we weren't in the Middle East.  Better to take the hurt to them and get of more than isolationism would take care of.

The bottom line is that there will ALWAYS be people ready to attack the US. You can 'deal with it' in Iraq and Afghanistan where you place your fellow countrymen and women in clear and present danger on an ongoing basis (where the enemy can readily take potshots at you) or you can 'police' terror and minimise it and prevent it by concentrating on domestic security. Let's face it nearly as many americans have died in Iraq as did in the WTC plane attack. I'm guessing not many jihadists have the airfare to JFK and if they did they would be incredibly easy to deal with if airport security was adequate.

I used to think that, but the truth seems to be that these people hate us no matter what we do.  We've already burned so many bridges that there is no turning back now.  Israel is really the only militarily powerful ally we have in the region.  I say this because I don't really consider Turkey or Pakistan true allies.

Nonetheless, I approve of what Pakistan did to this madrassa.  These "schools" are often the source of militant indoctrination, and if bombing is what it takes to kill these extremists, then so be it.

I'll admit, I'm not a very compassionate person when it comes to foreign policy.  Machiavelli and Vlad Tepes seem to be the best guides in dealing with the Middle East, since the majority of the region is so volatile.  Iraq is essentially the Transylvania of the Middle East, and it will likely take another Saddam to keep things in order.

The only other option is to split the country into 3 parts based on ethnicity.  For whatever reason, the American government has proven resistant to this idea.

Because then you'll have 3 countries to invade for oil, now you only have one.

Well, I think this Iraq thing has been more about the military industrial complex than oil.  Refineries are getting attacked and contractors for oil companies are getting killed, so if this was done for oil, it's even a bigger failure than is already apparent.
