It's a matter of using Israel as a proxy in the Middle East. Granted, we have to be careful in how far we support them. It was wise of us to condemn their actions against Lebanon, since that balanced things out on the political scene.CameronPoe wrote:

I guess what I'm trying to say is this. Israel is in a position where they can take out the "trash" much easier than us. They can attack countries with terrorists in them and take the flak for it, while we condemn certain actions by them. We'll still fund them and ultimately side with them on most things, but it's better that they take the brunt of the attacks than us. Essentially, they are our version of the Palestinians. The Palestinians are the pawns of the neighboring Muslim countries, but they're losing because they don't have the funds or weapons that Israel has.
Inevitably, this is a game that will continue until the Islamic World gradually becomes Western. It's expensive, but it can be less that way if we can get more Western support in this game. The U.K. and Canada are our most notable patrons in aiding these pursuits.

It's fair to say not many people think the US balanced it out by "condemning" Israel's actions. The US let that go on for 30 days, and if I recall correctly, vetoed a UN resolution to condemn Israel. Not to mention all those pictures of the lovely Condaleeza Rice smiling that gap toothed smile while shaking hands with Olmert.Turquoise wrote:

*shrugs* I'm not saying it worked perfectly (and I despise Rice anyway), but inevitably, we will remain allied with Israel.Atakir wrote:

The problem I see now is that Lebanon is in a position where it is ready to support terrorists, because of the desperation of the people. Israel should have occupied Lebanon. That way, they could rebuild it and weed out what is left of Hezbollah.

They wouldn't have to be re-building hospitals, houses, schools, roads etc etc if they hadn't sparked off a war by firing rockets into Israel and kidnapping people.Iron_Sentinel wrote:
Rubbish. Hezbollah do a lot of good work in Lebanon - they are helping fun the recovery of the war, they build and run hospitals, and they look after the community and more.[TUF]Catbox wrote:

Its just the military wing that is questionable - but IMO, i reckon they are preety good people.
Maybe Israel shouldn't have made repeated incursions into Lebanon and hold prisoners since the first time they invaded. Your point?Cougar wrote:

The media works wonders, practically everyone believes the Hez raided Israel for no reason and then launched rockets.
CNN wrote:
Hezbollah militants cross into Israel, kill three Israeli soldiers and kidnap two others in a bid to negotiate a prisoner exchange, a demand rebuffed by Israel. Another five Israeli soldiers are killed after the ambush. Israel responds with a naval blockade and by bombing hundreds of targets in Lebanon, including Beirut's airport and Hezbollah's headquarters in southern Beirut. Hezbollah responds with rocket attacks targeting northern Israeli cities.

Hezbollah started sending rockets into Israel before the recent bombings of Lebanon began. They sent more rockets into Israel afterwards as well.

It looks to me like Syria and Israel should have divided Lebanon amongst themselves. Lebanon obviously isn't capable of handling its own affairs.PRiMACORD wrote:

The Israeli occupation of Lebanon is what led to the creation of Hizballah, genius.
Bubs is right on this one.
I don't think anyone is going to change their opinions on this one. Better to just leave it alone gents. Everyone has a different view.
Every country has their dark past, present and more then likely future (if they last that long). The United States was based on conquering and destruction of the native populations of Northern America. The French and English in the French and English war. Russia, well shoot, do I need to mention Stalin? The Turks, well there's quite a bit there. Irish, the IRA. Germany and two rather large wars. Japan and all the fighting leading up to and during the second World War (canabalizim, civilizan slaughters).
There really isn't a single country (I've left the middle east out of my examples for a reason) without a dark history and everyone can point fingers and name names, but it's not going to do anything. No one is going to budge and it's going to come down to an armed conflict. The United States will more then likely stick with Israeli not only but largely in part due to the enemy of our enemy is our friend.
That policy is also what got us all messed up in this deal. So take that into mind, but no one really seems to think of the future when they do something. Ok, my rant is done, I'm tired and rambling.

Yes, but if they had conquered Lebanon completely, Hezbollah would not exist -- or it wouldn't last for long.Bubbalo wrote:

The 1982 Lebanon war began 6 June, when Israel invaded again for the purpose of attacking the Palestinian Liberation Organization. During the conflict, 14,000 Lebanese and Palestinians were killed, and the Israeli army seiged Beirut.
This year conflict killed over 1,500 people, mostly Lebanese civilians, severely damaged Lebanese infrastructure, displaced about one million Lebanese.
Poor little Israel *sigh*.
