My friend (the one that lost his 1600Pro, if you remember) is finally in the market for a new card.

I need some advice on what card would be a good addition to his system.

The system he's running has a:
P4 @ 2.0 Ghz
1GB RAM
And a 250 watt PSU

What card (and other upgrades) will let him run med/high at decent FPS (if possible, if not, something that will allow him to play worry free), but won't die like his last one from exposure to high settings?

Another GB of RAM...

7800GS is the best AGP card.

X1950Pro AGP has yet to be released, should be out soon though. Expect it before Xmas. It will take the crown as the best AGP card.

Other good cards:
7600GT AGP
7600GS

Thats pretty much the end of the list!

When you say he "lost" his card, do you mean he managed to misplace it or it died out on him?

A 6800 will run you fine at Mid/High at 1024x768, with 2x AA and View distance 100%.  40-50 FPS.  I just upgraded from a XFX 6800 128mb, and I can tell you I got these ^ graphics settings with it.

His mobo is only expandable to 1GB max, so there isn't anything he can do there.

As for his card, it died after playing on high settings. As it turns out, there wasn't a warranty on the card so he's finally ready to buy another one.

so it overheated to death?  i've never heard of a video card dying from being pushed too hard unless it was heat related

I don't know how it died. I'll have to ask him.

he should think about getting a new Power supply if he wants a significant improvement gfx card-wise...maybe?

7600GT is a pretty good upgrade, but you have to wonder when the AGP slot reaches its limits.

I asked for advice on this last week and after reading a lot of reviews and comparing prices, I came to the conclusion that your best alternative is the Ati X850 Pro, which can be bought for only $ 130 in www.newegg.com.  I ordered that card this week.  The performance is similar to the 7600 GT and it's a $100 cheaper card.  Advice courtesy of Headstone.
i think he should save his money and get a new motherboard.. 1 gig of ram can really hold you back.   I recently upgraded to 2 gigs.. HUGE difference... and yes, a 250 w psu wont get him very far.....  I would say go with the 7600gs...with hopes of getting a newer motherboard soon...

and almost for the same price as a new vid card, he could get a new motherboard.....  I picked mine up for  around 100

if i was to recommend a GPU, i'll say the 7600GS, AGP or PCI-e are good. I run 2142 on nearly all specs high with 35-60FPS, sometimes it drops to 30 but its not significant for me. enough for me to get a KDR or 3.0 on the VOSS which i'm happy for lol... but my total KDR is a disgrace! thanks to the laggy servers until now ^^.

anyways, i suggest getting another gig of ram, overclock that cpu to atleast 2.2ghz and get atleast a 400W PSU with atleast 16A on the 12v rails

tell him to wait until he can afford a whole new PC.

he needs more ram, and to do that he needs a new mobo
needs a new gfx, and for that he needs a better psu.

thats like what, the whole pc right there?  just wait til after xmas and prices will be uber cheap on everything.
i_dun_nV_u----his buddy cant upgrade... 1 gb max...

and are you are happy with the results you got with the 7600gs??  I'm looking to upgrade from a BFG 6200 OC....  its either a 7600GS or drop more on a 7800gs

hi thebungalowkunkiekid, sorry i couldn't have replied any earlier, the 7600GS with atleast ddr400 ram is a not so bad compliment, i'm running on high and medium, low shadows because its rather pointless... if you can email me, i can give you more detailed information on my PC stats... or simply visit, www.xfire.com/profile/fungry and scroll down to see my PC specifications.

thanks
i find the 7800GS a wallet killer/

Couple points and some good comments above.

The X850 Pro is only 130 at newegg very good price for a very decent card.

But look at his system only 1G of ram a 2G P4....

His CPU and Memory will really be a bottleneck for any high end video card right now.

Also the best AGP card is the 7800GS+ 512MB but it's also 300 dollars. You could spend the same money on a PCI version and motherboard.

He would be better off getting a new baord with PCI-E at this point.
