They videoed it and showed their faces on the film, which means it won't take long to track them. It was in the news here too, I was apalled.

Todays news on it is that 10 of the 14 teenage boys involved have been identified. Charges of rape, other sexual assault and child pornography production and possession are the charges they look likely to face.
In response to Bubbalo's post in the 1st page, they arent 12-13 they are 16-17, nearly adults and should be sent to big man's prison if they want to act like "big men". You might want to check some of your facts as well, read the article and some of the others in Australian News, because some of things you have said are false.

It doesn't mention their age, and that's the first time I've heard the police talk about rape charges. What other facts do I have wrong? I think you'll find you're the one who need to check facts: they aren't tracking them down based on video footage, but the credits which name most of the people involved. Further, if they're only 16 or 17 they'll be in long enough to make it to a proper prison anyway.

I couldnt believe it when i read this story. Compared to other news stories - of the present and the past - this one has been treated preety quietly. No big public outrage etc etc, which i find absolutely disgusting. The media, arguably, is giving more attention to the new solar power station than it is this crime.
I also read that the boys that made and distributed the video are getting a lot of online backing from their friends over the net - mostly though Myspace.
It is crimes such as these where i would happily support the death penalty - or at LEAST corporal punishment. They are sick, twisted individuals that deserve to be raped with a piece of razor wire.

I think the reason for the lack of media coverage is that it isn't a contentious issue. Everyone agrees that what they did is wrong, therefore coverage is limited to report on how far the police have gone. There's no back and forth arguments between groups to cover. Further, it comes out of Victoria during the leadup to the election, further stifling it.

Although it does not mention their age you just have to look at the front page of any Australian newspaper to see their faces pastered on, faces that belong to people of that age gap, hardly the "12-13" that you said. Hopefully they make proper prison but if they did they would probably be put into Protection. And I think they will get off lightly because of previous rape cases and other cases that appear in Australian County Courts where rapists only get 6 years or so for the damage they cause.
The best prisons are in Brazil, I respect the way they handle honor codes in there.

Off course I want them to be punished for their crimes, but I think focus should be on the victims for starters. And off course, making sure it doesnt happen again.

In the "prison food chain" people who commit sexual offenses live right at the bottom, meaning that if they are put into mainstream they get their arses kicked by the other prisoners.
