Okay, the "how old is your car" thread got me thinking about this a bit.  It seems to me that non-Americans aren't as obsessive about their cars as we are here in the states, and even people in the South are probably more obsessive than other parts of the country.  Like, my dad took a '59 Ford pickup completely apart and put it back together in his spare time, basically for the hell of it.  Is that something that people from other countries do often?  Also, what about racing in other countries?  My dad and I race on a small dirt track here.  I figure every weekend that the track is open, around 100 people show up to race and another 1,500 or so come out to watch, and we live in an area that is pretty rural (the city we live in has about 25,000 people and the county has around 40,000 total).  Is there anything like that where you live?

Well, here racing is obviously big.  Its Indy, people here live for racing....and football.....and basketball....and what fucking sport dont people in Indiana live for lol.  I love cars, Ive always had a liking for them.  As I put in the old car thread, I would love to have a '63 Chevy Impala and a '57 Chevy.  Both trimmed in chrome, nice chrome wheels, and restored to look as if it were right from '63 and '57.

The guy that owns the recording studio I work at has two matching '69 Chevies that he's going to restore into one.  They're fucking gorgeous.  And I couldn't believe that they have power windows and seats.  That really blew me away.  I had no idea that cars that old had power anything.  Even the little triangle window inbetween the side window and the windshield (know what I'm talking about?) is power.  How sweet is that?

I would definately say America is more fond of their cars. I know Indy racing is much bigger in Europe and stuff though. I would love to see one of those 24 hour endurance races through the streets of a city, that would be simply amazing. America does have NASCAR though. One thing that everybody loves about it is the fact that they're really stock cars. Anybody in America that can afford a decent car can go out and buy a Chevrolet Monte Carlo or a Dodge Charger. One thing I can't believe is the loyalty for Japanese cars here in our own backyards! People say that Japanese cars are more reliable, how come you don't see any Japanese cars older than the 80s? You always see old American cars, they look like pieces of junk but they run none-the-less. The old Japanese cars obviously don't run any more since they're not on the road. My brother worked for a tow truck company for 2 years towing cars and he said the most common car he towed was a Toyota. He would be happy towing an American car, although it rarely happened, because it had solid frames and he kept tearing the Jap frames. I don't know where all this talk on dependable Japanese cars came from. GM is over here almost going out of business, millions of Americans will lose their jobs, but Americans don't care, they just want to save some quick cash and buy a piece of crap Japanese car, well you know what, you get what you pay for. In the long run, you'll save money with an American car. Hell my brother has been in 2 bad accidents. Both in Chevys, drove away from both. Every other car involved in those accidents had to be towed because they're plastic Japanese cars. American is the way to go! Also keep this in mind, my brother thought of this the other day:

Would you ever forgive Osama Bin Laden for the 9/11 bombings?
Then why forgive Japanese for what they did at Pearl Harbor?

And for you people who don't understand... Mitsubishi made the planes that Japanese used in WWII. I know it's not just Mitsubishi that we shouldn't buy, avoid all of them. Support Americans!

Nascar, mudding, dragracing is borderline motorsport racing F1, rally, gp moto, and other road racing that does more than left turns and goes around ovals is racing. Guess what more Japanese cars are coming to America no matter what cause of the gas prices and supply and demand. Many of the big name american car companies are closing a great protions of their manufacturing due to low demand. Guess what Kia is an asian car company that has a 10year warranty and mitsubishi is also 10years warranty the max i have seen here is 3-5 so i would rather have a kia or a mitsubishi than an "american" vehicle. Japan had the biggest balls in the war to attack america. Where do most guys start off looking for thier old cars yep the junk yard where as japan they dont like to use old technology. So being obese is the way to go buy stuff that you cant afford is the way to go and waste resources is the way to go man your messed up in the head. Check online or the news papers look how cheap american cars are now the new 2006 trucks are under 30,000 with optional features and the cars. are being sold under 15,000.

Americans are way more obsessed with cars than Europeans. In Europe there is a far greater use of small, economical cars. These are the most popular cars bought from car supermarkes in the UK are:
1   Volkswagen  GOLF
2   Ford  Focus
3   Ford  Fiesta
4   Vauxhall  Corsa
5   Renault  Clio

When I was in America for a couple of weeks over the summer I only recall seeing three small cars, 2 were convertible Volkwagen beetles and one new mini. Everyone seemed to either have an SUV, truck or large saloon car. Also people rarely if ever quote the year their car was made here.

As for racing I guess the more popular ones in the uk are F1 and the World Rally Championship. I guess people prefer to watch cars do 80 mph down a 3meter wide Welsh mud track in the dark that see 200 laps of an oval.

IBM made and sold the computers that were used to organise the Nazi genocide.
Hugo Boss designed the Nazi uniforms.
Coke-a-Cola made Fanta for the Nazis.

On another note, the comparison between Osama Bin Laden and the Japanese is wrong. Osama Bin Laden actually organised terrorist attacks and is therefore bad. The vast majority current Japanese population had absolutely nothing to do with the second world war as they weren't alive at the time therefore cannot possibly be blamed.

Or, more accurately, invented Fanta for Germany.  They didn't have access to Coke syrup.

In Europe it's about WRC (Rally racing). Well, that's what it seems like. That and touring cars. Smaller cars with handling and acceleration being the main ones. Not outright speed in "Circle circuits"

Don't get me wrong though, those 300Mph Ovals are really fun to watch. But so is watching a car do 120 on a cliff edge in the alps. Rally was at it's best when it was group B cars in the 80's. You know, when they used to fly into the crowds.

I hate F1 though, it just seems all snobby and everything just seems "fake" and for the money.

I used to love the Drag Racing, Oval Curcuits, Truck Pulling and all that when i was a kid. I moved on as i felt that after awhile you see there isn't much substence to those type of racing and there's more to think about and so enjoy when watching something like Rally. I'm a car nut too, not your average grease monkey car nut but someone who enjoys the technical aspects of it.

I know loads of ppl restoring old 2 seater sports cars. When you get past 50, its the thing to do.
You should see some of the 'boy racers' around my town with £15000 of crap stuck on a crap car in a vain attempt to look cool, lol. Excuse me but a 1.4L Astra is always going to be a 1.4L astra, doesn't matter what crap you bolt on it.
There are numerous stock car tracks and clubs along with go karting.
An off road rally takes place every month in the near by forest.
For the size of the population Ireland has some had some of the best rally drivers in the world. But it has to be said that in Northern Ireland its Motorbikes and racing thats most popular. Joey Dunlop FTW!!!

So no its not Americans that are crazy about cars. I think its just men in general. Its the tinkering with a greasy box and playing with your big end that does it!!!!!

@ kilgore, I've been looking into alot of 50's mercury's and lincolns, just last week i was checking out an all original (too expensive for kr@cker) 1956 lincoln premier with all power windows (even vent/wing windows) and a power antenna, you'd be surprised how much of what you think is "modern" technology is pushing the upper half of the century old mark, even superchargers and fuel injection

@ some of the other asshats posting here, so guess what this was a thread just posted to satisfy some curiosity as to how other national cultures that arent so dependent on personal transportation (so guess what you can't hardly get anywhere in america by bus or train) and guess what you did you went and turned it into a "my country doesn't suck guess what your country sucks" bs flamewar so guess what it's better to stay silent and allow everyone to think your an idiot than open your mouth and remove all doubt so guess what you just had to post and guess what now there is no doubt

Rally is pretty big in Europe and speedway too.
America is a pretty big country with a scattered population, so they like big cars. Sweden is pretty much the same, and in Sweden you'll see that cars are bigger than in mainland Europe, maybe not as many SUVs as in the US, but the cars here are bigger than in say the Netherlands.
