Why would that matter? There are quite a bit of Muslims in the US military.

Yeah, but converting right before shipping out would have to freak out his buddies.

"So, what did you do before leaving?"

"Converted to Islam."

Then check your ammo.................

no, not really.  I had a couple of muslim guys in my unit in Iraq.  that was never an issue because we were all American first.

freakin PM bug, dont mean to hijack your thread frank, but I was trying to send GS a message:

i'm trying to nap my lunch, and it appears psi-ops needs to test out some of their equipment in the neighboring field, nothing like trying to doze off to and 8 bit version of "fur elise" or some of JP Sousa's fine marches. Anyway, it just got me curious, weren't you going that way? How long you got left for training (if you started)? That just seems like one of the most interesting fields and i have yet to meet anyone from it.

Thanks everyone for the support.  As of today, I actually have an update as of when Ill be leaving.  Apparently the commanders that book the jobs, found a security forces job open for Nov. 28.  They booked me on it because they knew thats what I wanted.  Apparently, Im being told that it wasnt their job to book.  It was for another area or something I guess.  So they re-booked me as General (rather than Security Forces) for Jan. 16.  My recruiters flight chief (his boss) put me at high priority to get me out sooner than that.....so if some kid in random town, Indiana, or even part of Illinois and Kentucky has some issue that comes up and cannot go, I get his date.

So as of right now.....I could get a call in 3 weeks saying Im going, or I will leave Jan 16.  Atleast I get used to being on standby all the time I guess.  So.......thats where things are as of now............*sigh*

Damn, theyre sending you in as open general! I had a few guys in my BMT that did that and they all became Services. If you dont know what that is they are the guys that hand out towels at the gym and who server you food at the chow halls. Not the kinda job I think you want. I personally had to go in with a guarenteed job. Mine was Satellite, Wideband and Telemetry Systems. AFSC 2E1X1. Got a $7,000 bonus upon completion of Tech School. Good luck on not getting shafted. Welcome to the US Air Force.

I got extremely drunk and had sex ALOT. Those are the 2 things that you cant do it BMT. The week before Basic is a blur to me. Hell I remember people in my MEPS group in the hotel were all getting drunk as hell and having sex with each other the night before we left for basic! Not a good idea since you have to get up at 4 a.m.  Also we had a few guys in my BMT flight that pissed hot and got discharged after like 3 days into BMT!

Yeah, it sucks they are sending me as General.....but if I go in and specify SF during in-processing supposedly Im pretty much guaranteed (recruiter cant 100% guarantee, but can 99% guarantee) that I will get security forces.  If I get some random ass job like logistics apprentice or some shit where I stand in a warehouse and count the supplies that come in, Ill be pissed......same goes for handing out towels in the gym....

Some SF jobs give bonuses for them....but not many.  I believe dog handlers get a bonus.

And yeah masques.....Im getting a first hand taste of life in the military lol

Yea just make sure thats like priority 1 and let them know ASAP what jobs you wanna apply for so they can cut your orders and set you up a classdate before you get outta Basic. Reason I stress that is so you dont get heldover after basic and get to stay there any longer than you need or want to. Yea I believe that dog handlers get a bonus but i think thats all under the Security Forces AFSC though but im not positive.

Yeah, its under the SF jobs.  If this customer ever gets his shit fixed on the phone, Im gonna call up my Sgt. and see if there is any possibility to change my code to specify SF rather than just general.  Maybe he can "lose" the form and Ill go in tomorrow to sign the one with security forces signed.

And also you cant go around healing yourself after you'd just been shot once by an M95 in the chest.

No way!  Damn, I thought I could pick a different spawn point to go to......I was thinking rather than Sadr City CP, I would spawn at the Baghdad air port this time.

Thanks for the heads up T1g3r, I am fully aware of consequences that can happen.  Believe me, I had a good chat with my uncle.  My uncle fought in the gulf in the first war, and fought the Iraqis.  He was in the Marines, and he was one of the first people I called to tell that I was enlisting.  He said he was extremely proud of me for stepping up and doing it, but he wanted to make sure I know all the repercussions that could happen.  He was dead serious when saying all this...my uncle has seen alot of shit, and doesnt care to elaborate on it other than "Shooting at someone at a distance is easy.....its not much different than shooting at targets, your trained to shoot targets.  When you use your knife........its a different story.......nobody can train you mentally for that."

He pointed out to me that when it comes down to it, I have to sure I can pull the trigger, because if not, if I hesitate for half a second, that half a second could kill me.  He also mentioned that it is not a game....if your buddy gets killed, loses an arm, gets shot, or anything like that happens to you, you cannot reset and start over, you cant tell your enemies "Ok lets start over I dont want to play anymore".  And when the guy next to you gets shot up, and hes in your arms shitting and pissing himself and crying for his mom.....you cant start over and bring him back.  He basically said thats stuff I need to realize before I sign those papers.

I was fully aware of the scenarios that could happen.  No one can say they will pull the trigger....they dont know until the time comes.....yes, thats what were trained for.  But being trained for it and pulling the trigger to consume a life is 2 different stories.  Granted, I have not been through combat, but I can probably assure you, Gunslinger can hopefully say that I am correct in all this.

Well said. If I could karma you again I would. You're doing a noble thing, joining the army so that other people like me can sleep safe in their beds.

The problem with war games is that people get so gung ho when they reach a good level. They think that they can just jump out in front of some real soldiers, jump and go prone, and start shooting their PKM like crazy and that everyone will magically die. They also don't realize that there are no glitches in life, and that FF is always on.

Another thing that BF2 (wisely) omits is blood. It's all one thing when people ragdoll after getting hit by artillery, and another when they just get vaporized. Another thing to remember is that there is no big red icon on the mini map where your commander is launching the next strike, and there is G-Force in a real plane. Staying conscious is as hard as winning the dog fight.

Excellent points m8. When I was in Iraq when the war started I was driving a Humvee on a convoy through Baghdad to the Airport when I got hit by an RPG. It went through my passenger side door and came within about 3 inches of blowing me in half. Sadly to say my fellow airmen that was sitting in that seat is not here today. I tried to get him medical attention as quick as I could but he bled out before I could reach the aid station. That was before the US military had armor plating installed on all Humvees. So you dont have to worry about that shit anymore. You gotta be prepared for shit like that. At the time I didnt think anything like that could happen to me, but my outlook has certainly changed.

You don't know what war is until you've experienced it. My uncle died in the second World War...he drove over a mined bridge. At least it was painless

As some or most of you know, I enlisted to the U.S. Air Force.  Ive been on delayed entry for about a month now, and have been waiting for a ship date to come through.  Well, the waiting finally ended today.  I leave for basic Nov. 28.  It is a hell of alot earlier than I expected.  I have been expecting to leave in Jan/Feb area, and my g/f and family have all been expecting the same.  The toughest part about it for me, is knowing how much it sucks for my g/f and family.  For myself......I dont really care that it came earlier than expected, Im ready to get it started and get it over with, I just feel bad for my g/f and family.

Just thought I would inform those of you who care.
Man  Your an admirable person. Thats the same branch of service I was in. I Know you will do fine. I wish you all the luck in the world. I hope your family is behind you all the way. I am, and Wish you all the best. I personally want to thank you for doing this for every American Who cant or just wont. Your a credit to us all.

First off, good job picking the USAF, it's the best branch by far.  Second, I commend you for stepping up to do this and serve your country, as I did.  Third, I want to slap you in the fucking face for going open general.

When I enlisted my recruiter gave me the same bullshit, "Yeah, go open general and you can pick what you want to do while your in basic training."  BULLSHIT.  I wanted to go Loadmaster, but it wasn't open yet, my recruiter talked me into going open general in the hope that a position would open.  Didn't quite work out the way he or I expected.  When you get to basic, on your third or fourth week you are going to go down to the admin building to "pick" your AFSC.  When you get there they will take you into a little room and show you a list of AFSC's.  Not jobs, AFSC's.  They'll say "Pick five." and then you leave.  They then look at which jobs are the most undermanned and that is where you get to go.  I got extremely lucky and got 3C0X1, look it up.

My best advice I could possibly give you is to call your recruiter and tell him you want to be a cop and that you DO NOT want to be open general.  Wait as long as you need too, because trust me, you don't want to be a cook or a Information Assistant.  Not that cop is much better, but whatever floats your boat.  I just hope you like chem gear exercises and sitting on a flight-line with no toilet at 3 in the morning every other day.

Cop=Almost the crappiest job you can have.  Unless your in a K-9 flight. Then it's cool.  But other than that, it sucks.  A lot.
