So before I buy 2142, i'll need a dvd drive. I got $250 worth of credits at a computer store and thought why not get a new drive. Before I do this though, what speed do u guys recommend? I currently got a 52x cd drive, and when I looked for stuff online, the dvd drives were all 16x, 18x, stuff like that, so I'm a bit confused.

So what speed?

I dunno much about DVD drives or CD drives for that matter, but anyway 16x is a reasonable speed, and 18x is probably the more newer/ and expensive ones.

I guess i'll ask around at the store, gonna head over there in a half an hour or so, so if anyone has anymore info they could give me it would greatly appreciated.

I just pulled this one off newegg.com and the 18X refers to the DVDR write speed. They also have different speeds for the different functions. The read speed for a CD of this one is 48X but it is still consitered a 18X DVD-R drive. sooo whatever you but dont worry because the 18X is not the speed for cd reading.....

Just bought a Samsung writemaster, on sale, another plus, and spent some more credits on another 1 gig stick of ram. Now i gotta install this bad boy, gonna all be trial and error as I haven't done this in 1 1/2 years.

16X is fine for a DVD burner/player.
(just not for cd)

As the discs get larger in size, the number of the speed will go down and look slow, but it could really fast for the size at hand.
