they are masters of all musical devices (techniques used in writing a song, not instruments), maynard's voice is hauntingly surreal, they break the rules for the instruments they play (using the drums as a harmonc device as they do in asia for instance), you can understand what's going on (as opposed to most bands incoherent screaming and overuse of distortion), and write lyrics that are actually deep and meaningful
