It doesn't suck. It's Battlegroup and Urban Ops game modes copy BF2, and do a worse job, but its CQC mode is well worth it.

o0h i still got this game in the ps1 lol.  its well old but i really enjoyed being able to customize units.  it was a solid rts imo in its day.  anyway there are windows and linux versions on the link below.

http://www.gamershell.com/news/38654.html

i thought some of us oldies might like to give it another whirl.

Thanks to the recent loss of a functioning DVD drive.

Upcoming exams and a massive amount of writing to accomplish for assessment at school...

I'm downloading some of the games on the op's list. Soldat used to be an old favourite so that's first.
Whoa... Can't believe these forums are still kicking.

Dunno if these have been posted, but:

Savage:
RPG/RTS/BF2 Cross.
One person on each team is the "commander", who has access to build buildings, gather materials etc... while everyone else is a separate unit, capable of doing almost anything. As the game progresses (Providing your team still has a commander), you will be able to buy new units to play as, as well as magic, bonus weapons, and things like that.

You also have your own independent levelling system separate from the commander's upgrades. For killing enemy units/structures, mining, building and killing NPC enemies, you gain Experience points which automatically allocate themselves to give you better weapons, better armour and more carrying capacity for mined items.

Wolfenstein - Enemy Territory:
If you don't know about this one, go download it now and learn the game yourself. Here's a quick summary for the lazy people: WWII Multiplayer shooter. Much WWII fun/generica abounds.

Mod- True Combat: Elite:
Its a mod for Wolf:ET, and a damn good one at that. Its basically just CS-style gameplay minus the cost for weapons. The more kills you get with a "kit", the more weapons you will have unlocked for later on. These unlocks only last one round, so use them as much as possible.

Urban Terror:
CS/UT Combo. Bright enemies, shitton of modern weapons and wall jumping abilities. Very fun once you learn the l33tpro walldodge.

Pretty cool (free) game, I'm just messing about on it atm. Hit the link, take a look; in doing so you're giving my colony food

Note: Depending on your intelligence there is a fairly steep learning curve, your colony will start off slow but will pick up in a day or so.

Savage's playerbase has moved to this mod:

Most people should be downloading the Windows standalone. There's an active 80-player server, last I checked.

Commanders:

a) control a group of slow-moving workers who can mine, build/repair (defensive emplacements and tech buildings) and (weakly) attack
b) give players orders
c) may also assign officer status to a certain number of players
d) research the tech tree (available player types, weapons, equipment) in the order chosen, or, if smart, as suggested by the leading players
e) played like a RTS, with much of the same strategy

Players:

a) may mine, build/repair and deal damage for XP that is quickly gained (but reset each match); upgrades do not make them invulnerable against lower level players
b) may obey commanders and follow officers around
d) collect gold from mines, destroyed NPC's, slain players, and damaged buildings
e) played like a FPS, with a world around you that develops like an RTS
