For every day life, I'd go for automatic. Manual is for fun.

They should make a car with full manual and full automatic gears!
Agree, auto is just easier in the Midwest with snow and bad road conditions in the winter.  Let's me keep both hands on the wheel for better control.
I find I prefer manual in the snow.  Gives me a lot more control over how much power I'm putting down to the road/snow.  Makes it a lot easier to keep my tires from spinning.

Which brings up another point, to me a triptronic gearbox is more of a compromise than getting hte best of both worlds.  Half the reason I like a manual transmission is because of the clutch.  I gain significant control over the ammount of power that gets to the wheels.  I've done a lot of offroading in my day, and I'm always having to pull my friends out of the mud cause they've got automatics and wind up just spinning the tires

they actually make automatics for big rigs
can't remember who it was, think maybe international, made one that can supposedly handle the torque/weight, but they've only been out a few years, if they're gonna be problematic alot of fleet owners are gonna find out in about 2 more years, most of the biggest (80,000# or so) trucks still have 15 to 21 speed sticks

I got a manual shifter in my 1337 vehicle, but I prefer an auto, because it just makes driving more fun and easy, plus it's more fuel economic then manual.....

In the UK very few people have an automatic, usually the disabled

Huh?  You better look again.  I have yet to see a vehicle with an automatic that gets better gas mileage than one with a manual.

As for me, if the car has a small engine with minimal HP or a sports car, then the manual.  If the car is more of a luxury ride and has the power, the automatic all the way.

To anyone that says manuals last longer, that isn't true any more.  If you keep the automatics serviced like your supposed to, they can last as long as the car, where at some point you will have to replace the clutch in a manual trans.

Manual ftw, that's what my dad made me learn to drive on, so that's probably what I'll drive for the duration.

Needing to replace the clutch really depends on how the vehicle was driven.  If your nice to the clutch, it'll last for ever.  But if your drag racing all the time it's not gonna last.  And of course the same thing can be said for an automatic.  If your easy on the throttle during acceleration it will last longer.

For example Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) gets rid of that problem on automatic transmission.

I drive a BMW530D and I can't get the tires to spin if I have DSC on. Works a bit like ABS brakes, the computer makes sure that no wheel is spinning and reduces power going to the wheels that are about to spin.

Tiptronic is still an automatic. You might be telling the car when to shift but you're not the one who does it and as a result, there is a significant shift delay.

The technology is getting a lot better tho, prime examples are the 7 speed autos on mercs and the ZF trannies on bimmers.
There is no delay whatsoever on my Audi S8, lightning fast change.

Also, autos really suit bigger torqier (real word?) engines and thats why they are popular in the US and not so in the UK.
A clutch will be a thing of the past before long, no modern race cars even have a clutch and as always, technology filters down.

The whole argument of ego-boosting through drive-types is utterly pointless...but somehow I could picture it back in the days of horseback travel: YOUR FRIESAN SUCKS COMPARED TO HORSEZILLA! But of course, real men walked.

Yeah well, it's an S8

Autos do not suit vehicles with more torque, manuals do. It's why big rigs are still manual. It's difficult for automatic transmisions to handle high loads of torque through the torque converter.

I'm just not a big fan of stability control, it's mainly cause I used to do autocross and I just learned how to make a car do what ever the hell I want it to do, and I just look at that computer as trying to hinder me.  But that's personal preference.

I'll still say manual for the simple fact that it keeps the driver more aware of the vehicle.

Actually all high end drag racing vehicles are automatic.  They are very specialized transmissions though, and usually only have two gears (well 3 if you count reverse).  It's mainly because it allows for far faster shifting, which counts for a lot in a sport where tenths of a second can mean the difference between a win and a loss.

Automatics are really common. I searched for almost two years for a car I liked that was manual. People here like to eat, smoke, drink, and drive at the same time. They also have this crazy idea that driving a manual in a city is like living in hell. Basically, we're lazy! Manuals are normally found only on the super cheap cars and sports cars in America. Even on a Trans Am they are really hard to find.

Also a lot of drag cars are simply too difficult to drive using a manual. The slightly slip will cause you to stall or blow the tires off the car. Some cars are pretty fucking fast using an auto too. Hell, a lot of people dragging LS1 Trans Ams use an auto and part for part are normally faster.
