I'm assuming most of the people who posted this are from America, because I was surprised at how many people say they use autos. Are automatics fairly popular in the States?? Just over here in the UK you get hardly any automatcis. Anyhoo Manual for me.
Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known.
Diesel Manual, essential of life in the Australian bush.
I never bothered to get licensed until I needed to drive places. Got mine in my early 20's.KtotheIMMY wrote:

If you goes for performers there is only one thing >> Manual<<
I'm very tempted to start a topic asking that exact question right now...CameronPoe wrote:

Automatic for most of the cars, manual for powerful and semi-racing ones. At my XC90 I have Automatic but I can shift manually as well so I don't have problems...
Manual all the way. I learned to drive on a manual ... in a farm truck when I was 13. Of course the most difficult thing was realizing you need to push the clutch in to start it. I truly learned how to shift from movies. I knew what the engine sounded like. This ranger had no tachometer. Like not a broken one ... it didn't have one installed.
My car has a manual now as well. Better performance and better economy. And once you get good ... you can do pleanty of ... "things" while driving.

3 hours of gridlock a day. Automatic for sanity.
There's probably more autos over here than you think m8. A lot of Jap import 4x4s ( Ravs, Pajeros etc... ) are autos. Also prestige cars like Lexus, Jag and Mercedes often have auto gearboxes.KILLSWITCH wrote:

went for the 3rd choice, manuals are fun, but can be a bitch if that's all you got to drive, my daily driver is a grand marquis, nice easy riding, for my project ride it depends on what it is, top down cruisers and sedans = autos, trucks and sporty things = sticks
while we're on it, anyone here into flatheads and rat rods and such?

Automatic is great for long trips and getting drom A to B with out really doing anything. Manual makes you actaully drive the car
For every day life, I'd go for automatic. Manual is for fun.
They should make a car with full manual and full automatic gears!

Usually, on more expensive cars atleast, the difference in accelation is around 0.2 seconds, so the power loss isn't that major.ts-pulsar wrote:
Really depends on the truck. If I'm towing a lot, I prefer a manual cause a manual works better for slowing you down than an auto.the_outsider38 wrote:
I prefer my cars manual, but I own a 2000 Ford F-150 XL 7700 truck and you get better hauling capability with an automatic.
Manual for sure, you actually loose horsepower and torque with an automatic (well horsepower to the wheels). The RX-8 is an excellent example of this, the manual transmission has something like 250hp, and the auto only has something like 220hp.
That and manual transmissions usually last longer, give far more control over the vehicle, and in general, are just more fun.
power is nothing without delivery and control. A manual will handle and deliver that power much more effectively and efficiently. Since most people don't drive "more expensive" cars, that isn't really much of an issue.
Bikes FTW!!
Manual is way cooler.
they actually make automatics for big rigsVolatile_Squirrel wrote:
All big hauling riggs are manual, right?
I have a tiptronic gearbox which means no clutch but still has a gearstick
The vast majority.Volatile_Squirrel wrote:

Tiptronic is still an automatic. You might be telling the car when to shift but you're not the one who does it and as a result, there is a significant shift delay.Kurazoo wrote:

The technology is getting a lot better tho, prime examples are the 7 speed autos on mercs and the ZF trannies on bimmers.
how do you know, do your parents drive one? hehehehehejonsimon wrote:

Agree, auto is just easier in the Midwest with snow and bad road conditions in the winter. Let's me keep both hands on the wheel for better control.Gawwad wrote:
