ok iv delt with on board sound all my life, and im thinking of getting a soundcard, a cheapish one, but im not sure if it is really worth it, does a decent sound card actaully make that much difference..., my onboard right now sounds good 5.1 and alland i dont really know how it could sound better(hense i have had on board my whole life). my question is how much difference does a soundcard make and what properties makes this difference.

i have an audigy se and i can't tell any difference against my realtek inboard audio.  To me there is a lot more you can spend your money on to make a difference. Since no one else replied I hope this helps.

You get what you pay for. Cheapish card=cheapish sound.

Get the X-Fi extrememusic, bottom of the X-Fi range but worth it because of the directional sense it gives you.

its as much to do with cpu usage as sound....onboard always takes much more out of your cpu than a dedicated card will, leaving more cycles available for the game itself.

I would say to go and change your sound card like u said it was the cheapest one u could find.(maybe that is the problem

OK thanks for the help anyone  the problem is i cant afford $200AU for a sound card I'm looking for one about 75 Australian bucks, is there any good sound cards for around that price, $75AU =about 45-50US i think... I'm assuming, anyway thanks for all the help!!

i hated my onboard sound card. it caused my whole system to feeze and sometimes i would even get the BSOD. the best thing i ever did was put a new sound card in it. Also the voip function wouldnt work with my onboard but it worked great with the new card i put in.
