I believe the current trend sweeping the internet is the serious of user-upload user-contribution sites. This fad is underscoring the proliferation of sites such as
  • public forums and online communities (eg www.bf2s.com)
  • video sharing (eg googlevideo and youtub...ahh google video)
  • image hosting (eg imageshack)
  • file hosting etc...

What are some social/ethical/political effects of this movement?

Piracy, cheating rich Music Companies out of their cash.

You also forgot about Myspace and other such sites, I've noticed the newest trend stemming from myspace and "blogs" in general are ZOMG! i'm going to kill my best friend's girlfriend etc and a swarm of law enforcement are there since school violence is a growing problem..

I guess it allows bad ideas to flow faster. Like your school gunviolence example.

It also allows good ideas to flow just as fast. Like all things it has good sides and it has bad. Oh, and it's nothing new - we've been using the internet for this kind of thing almost since the day it was invented!

spend any amount of time talking to the general populous.  Say in retail/customer service of any flavor.  You will quickly lose any and all faith in the general intelligence of the populace at large.  I wouldn't trust those collaborative sites for anything other than pop-culture - which is precisely what they are.

ON the topic of forums, I think it's amazing that there are so many thousands of portals everywhere where people of EVERY type, group, orientation, division, and of opinion are found chatting it up!  This is truly the information age.

And as others have said, it's both 'misinformation' as much as it's information.  We all tell our opinions, we all tell facts, and we also tell opinions as facts, we plagiarize, we lie, we fantasize, and we manipulate.  But just the sheer volume of debate be it serious or frivelous...is amazing.  Think back twenty years ago.  There was not this kind of communication going on.

Anyway, just geeking out about this concept still....ok, i'm done.

That's what's so great about the internet and why user contribution isn't just a fad.

'geeking out' - - nice phrase - and I know what you mean - it's mind blowing to think about all those 'connections' being made around the world - and I've been doing this for over 10years and it still blows my mind to think about it - and this is just the begining!
