Which foreign languages are/were available in school?

{Maryland, United States}: When i was in high school we had a choice of Spanish, French, and Latin (I ended up taking two years of Latin). I always wondered, especially in other countries, what languages were available to you or were you encouraged to learn.

Where I come from, down the south-west of Western Austrlia, it sort of varies between schools. Private schools may just have French or Japanese.
But since I go to a Public High School, we had; Italian, French and Indonesian. We did have a choice of learning Japanese or Mandarin, but it phased out due to the unpopularity of it.

(Sweden)-English as main language. Then German or French. Some schools offer Spanish and Italian. It depends on the amount of students. But we study English for about 9 years.

Here in england (midlands) when i was a lad,it was either french or german.

I must admit i thought japanese was a hard language especially to be doing it at school.
