The income levels there are not near poverty, so I dispute your 28 million number. You treat it like they're sitting in the street living in a cardboard box. They can still put food on the table and keep a roof over their head. Low income yes, not poverty stricken. What do you suggest the government to do? Mandate the minimum wage at $15/ hour??
Ok, let's talk about the 12,8 million children that live in poverty in the US. Is it right? Use the same source if you wish. This ain't a joke.
Certainly not a joke. Still, according to the source, those 12.8 million children include those living in families with some income. Low income to be sure, but there's enough money for the basics. My Dad made right around 20K per year for a family of 4. According to those stats we were poor. Maybe so, but we always had enough of the essentials. I never went hungry, always had decent clothes, etc etc. Sure my Dad had to budget creatively and we had to go without some things, but it can be done. I'm still not convinced we need to be handing out free money to 12.8 million children's families.
