In case you don't remember Columbine http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Columbine_High_School

This is breaking news. Different school same state. Is something in the water there?
DENVER (Reuters) - Students were evacuated from a Colorado high school on Wednesday after shots were fired and a gunman who said he had explosives took at least four hostages, police said.

"It is a hostage situation, an adult is holding the hostages, he claims to have explosives," said Lance Clem, spokesman for the Colorado state troopers.

A spokeswoman for the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said that a number of shots had been fired inside the school. Jefferson County bomb and SWAT teams were on the scene.

Clem said five people had been taken hostage at Platte Canyon High School in Bailey, Colorado, about 35 miles southwest of Denver, but that one, a young girl, had already been released.

Clem told CNN that the gunman was identified as an adult male, possibly a parent of a student at the school of 460 students.

Bailey is about 30 miles from Littleton, Colorado, which was the scene of a school shooting that shocked the country seven years ago.

On April 20, 1999, two high school students, Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris, went on a shooting rampage at Columbine High School in Littleton, killing 13 people and wounding 21 others, before they committed suicide

Everywhere you go someones going to go into a school and just start killing people..

You cant hide from it, it happens everywhere..

Canada, US, Europe.. Asia.. etc..

even if you homeschool'd your kids, whats going to stop someone from coming in your house and shooting up the place..

its the way it is.. and it will always be like this.

We outlawed handguns because of a horrific school massacre.  And school shootings still happen here, because making guns illegal just makes it harder, not impossible.  http://www.24dash.com/content/news/view … wsID=10864

A gunman who was holding two girls hostage at a Colorado high school was captured by police who stormed the building where he was barricaded in a classroom, a local television station reported on Wednesday. FYI

More like he's dead!

The girl is critical, and the guy killed himself once SWAT stormed the classroom. . . . The other girl apparently is fine.

I could rephrase that a little.

"You can't hide from it, happens everywhere in the USA.."

I haven't heard of stuff like that happening in the Europe ever and I'm 100% sure that that has never happened in Finland and 99% on Sweden.

Yes, it did happen in Europe several times, I remember it happened in a school in the UK several years ago.  FYI, a few months ago, in Belgium an 18 yo  student left school in the morning where he was punished for smoking the night before, took the train to Antwerp all dressed in black wearing a long black raincoat, bought a shotgun and ammunition in a gun shop, and went on a killing spree trough town, killing a 2 yo child and her nanny and wounding another woman until he was shot by police.
His motive: extreme right killing all foreigners (the nanny was a black girl).

Down were i live (Tasmania, Australia) we had a man (he was crazy, like proclaimed crazy by doctors) who shot up a touristing area in port Arthur, killed 36 i think, wounding many others, he shot any 1 he saw, he escaped the scene before police got there left in a truck, hunted down a mother and 2 kids who ran in the forest before the police maneged to get him, they took him alive too. It can happen any were, this place is Nealy as south as you can get in our state and in Australia and 1.45 hour away from the closest city. i live in the bush about 30 Min's away from that place.

More or less correct, It also happened again shortly after, but the police could intercept before harm was done. However, I don't recall that we ever had a raid on a school in Belgium or taking hostage of schoolkids.
Racism, NeoNazi, Freaks, Weirdos...ect you'll find in any ages. Luckily in Europe (Belgium) we have more strickt laws on the possesion of firearms. After the incident you descibed above the laws and regulations on firearm became even more strickt. I don't think that situations like those happened in the US can happen over here (at least I hope not)

The same happened here in Argentina in a city south of Buenos Aires, a guy took his gun to the school and shot several of his classmates.  But, it seems that Colorado has an issue with this kind of stuff.

The only similar incident in the UK that I can remember was at Dunblane in 1996.  That prompted the change in our gun laws.

Perhaps after this and the much-publicised Houston cop shooting, the USA should look at their laws?

And just think what would've happened if teachers would be allowed to carry concealed pistols at school........this guy COULD have been shot before he did any damage.  Too bad we're focusing on the guns and not the criminals.  O well.

Yeah and how is your murder rate doing, and your violent crime rate doing??? Can't blame guns my friend.......Gun ownership in America is at AN ALL TIME HIGH, yet the crime rate, including violent crime, is at a 30 yr low (as of 2005 stats).  According to the FBI.  Guns are the problem? I think not, criminals are the problem and RESTRICTIVE laws on firearms create a society unable to defend itself, like I said, if those teachers had been packing, they would have had a BETTER chance to stop the violence.

Yeah it does happen in Europe, but as for Finland

NCPA.org wrote:

Denmark and Finland also have high rates of gun ownership and low crime rates.

Switzerland has one of the lowest murder rates in the world, and it requires all able-bodied males between the ages of 20 and 50 to have a military-issued automatic weapon, ammunition and other equipment in their dwellings.
Hmm interesting how guns reduce crime, No it can't be, say it aint so.
