FirFirst off, I'm not a racist, nazi or inbred Hill Billy with a fear of other cultures; I am (or was) very liberal but the debate I heard on the radio this morning about the Pope's word really did wind me up.

Many of the "I hate Islam" brigade can't stop telling us how Muslims want to Islamify the World and take away our freedoms and how we will never let that happen yada yada; but it already has!!!

I mean, television networks, newspapers & magazines are scared sh*tless about "offending" Muslims since the Dutch cartoon fiasco and other similar reactions.  The Pope's words have caused the burning of churches and a nun was shot dead in a revenge attack.

When someone dies because of this, violence wins and it's made worse by pandering to their fragile egos.  Freedom of Speech has already taken it's first hit. 

The most annoying thing about it is how we mustn’t offend them but they can offend us (By the way, I'm atheist so I'm not trying to start a Muslims vs. Christians thing).  If the BBC were to show a comedy sketch that involved Muhammad there would be uproar and I just wish for every cartoon of Allah that causes "offence", two more would come out until these people (and of course I know there are many followers of Islam that aren't violent but still voice there anger, even the moderates) realise that they can not dictate what people are and aren't allowed to say, especially when the so-called perpetrator doesn't even live in an Islamic country.

So what do you think guys, has freedom of speech already lost some of it's qudos?

We don't have freedom of speech in this country.  When Muslims carried banners that said "behead those who oppose Islam", they thought that freedom of speech would mean they got away with it.  They were later identified, arrested and charged with something (I forget what).

There are "faith" groups, admittedly the ones that preach about doing terrorist-type things, that are banned in this country.

So, is freedom of speech all it's cracked up to be?  Should we have freedom of speech in this country?

When the football world cup was on, my stepfather (who is a fire fighter) wasn't even allowed to put up an English flag on the fire station to support our team.  It was said that it "may offend minorities" it seems that we cannot do anything in this country without "offending minorities".
Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known.

EDIT 1: If you'd have said the Dutch ARE a cartoon fiasco I'd agree with you (just kidding :p), but since Denmark is somewhat different from the Netherlands I'm afraid I'm gonna have to give you a slap on the fingers here.

EDIT 2: After having posted EDIT 1, I am now having doubts as to whether the expression "to give someone a slap on the fingers" actually exists. It is probably something my diseased imagination came up with. I feel so stupid right now.

Its pretty bad when you cant even casually mention a sarcastic word to a muslim on the street in passing without being arrested, yet a muslim can stand there in the street and plop down his prayer matt if he wants, get up and burn a british flag and chant "god is Great" "Death to Blair" without even a warning. i feel sorry for the muslims who are trying to good, and have already let go of the popes comments. it always crosses my mind "fuck islam to hell" but then i try to remember that the people who are doing the bad shit arent representing the whole muslim community. but it is hard. they shot a nun for christs sake. yet any type of western comment on islam and they are up in arms. boils my blood.

Your damn right pal, this is what happens when you give 'rights' to people who don't believe in 'rights'. This shit can only go so far though before it all backfires on these idiots. There will be a turning point, but its going to get worse before it gets better.

It is BS the was Political Correctness has gotten out of control here in the UK. If my girlfriend and I were to go to a Muslim country, we would respect their culture to a reasonable level. She would cover her shoulders and legs, not a problem. If Muslim people want to live in our country, they can either respect our laws, traditions and beliefs or fuck off back to whatever third world shit hole they came from. I have nothing against Islam, but all you see in the media are Muslims complaining, rioting, and inciting racial hatred.
Freedom of Speech IS very important, as long as it doesn't attempt to infringe on anyone else's rights. Meaning that you CAN say what you like, as long as you're not setting out to deliberately offend people. If you choose to suppress the rights of other people, then you give up your own rights.
Just like criminals, they break the law and in doing so impede the civil rights of innocent, law-abiding people, then you have chosen to revoke your civil rights and get sent to jail/prison.

Tis' a sad day when immigrants who move into a country can dictate the behaviour of the country they move to.
Doesnt this mean they will just change theier new home to become like the one they left?

Here in Australia Muslim groups are up in arms that the Governmebt is introducing new "test" criteria to become an Australian citizen.
These groups are saying that they should not be singled out however at no time have i managed to find any shred of literature stating that the new tests will be for Muslims only, as far as the Government is concerned no matter what your original nationality you must pass these tests to become and Australian Citizen.

It is the first posotive step i have seen this government take on immigration issues in the last 10 years.

I love the fact that Australia is such a multi cultural country and so many people enjoy it enough to move here but it will be a cold day in hell before i change the way I live to suit the ideals of those wishing to move here.

Love our country then love our laws, language and way of life. Dont just move here and try to make it the same as the place you left, after all if you were prepared to leave and move all this way, your original country cant have been all that great to begin with could it??

All that's what the politically-correct activists want to turn America into. I'm sorry to say that they've had alot of success on multiple fronts, politicians being what they are and too scared to offend loud-mouthed minority and special-interest groups. I'm not a racist, but I'm not afraid to say it like it is.

There's sideways methods of going about restriction of freedom of speech. A car sales lot in my city can wave as many checkered flags as they want and fly as many balloons as they want and Koreatown can display as many of their flags as they want, but a military surplus pawn shop owner can't fly his US, Washington State, Marine Corps, Air Force, Army, Navy, Coast Guard and POWMIA flag over his own building without being forced by the city to take them down because they're an "eyesore."
