It is way too early for me to jump onto this. The price is too high and the unforseen future of DRM implementation is keeping me back. Plus I don't own an HDTV so I'll get nothing out of it if I owned one. It won't make any difference when it comes to installing one in a computer either. Look how long it's taking to get DVD media/software. How long do you think it would be till you start seeing Blu-Ray or HD-DVD media/software?

ultimately, if it lasts too long there will be a device put on the market which can read both - in which case, problem solved.  In my opinion, there is not really an issue with competing media formats.  I mean, DVD +/-R, DVD +/-RW etc can all now generally be read by any DVD drive.  Having multiple player platforms will not stand for long.  The best example of that is Betamax vs. VHS.  Sure, they existed simultaniously for a while, but one won out.  This is perhaps more likely to generate a hybrid device, however, seeing as they are the same physical shape and dimension and vary only in the data structure.  Worst case scenerio, the reader has two lasers.
Wouldn't need 2 lasers, I don't think. Both have blue lasers - I can't remember if they are focused the same though, but I'm sure that could be sorted out.
I don't know how they make it backwards compatible, but a DVD uses a red laser.

also even though bluray sounds good on paper, wasnt betamax technically better then VHS?
Yes.  A large part of the reason for the success of VHS over Betamax was that most of the porn at the time was released on VHS.  So, far the porn industry seems to be favoring Blu-Ray over HDDVD simply for the extra capacity which can be used for "interactive" features.

HVD (Holographic Versatile Disc) should be the next big thing
3.9 terabytes of data per disc - 160 times as much as single layer Blu-Ray......imagine the porn you could fit on that!!!!!

lol, its very true this was all started on pornography, its what made VHS the shit.  But it is also true that one of the biggest makers of adult media is backing the blu-ray which is Vivid.  And many smaller companies are jumping on the bandwagon, I think personally that Blu-ray is Sony's shining light, after so many downfalls with newer media this may be their ticket.  HD-DVD is great too dont get me wrong, but I really believe that Sony has found their horse, just because so many companies are backing it and putting their money into it, and now they have just given rights to Phillips and RCA to make Blu-ray players (fact check? heard it from a friend), thats two more heavy hitters in the Blu-ray corner, by next year we should be seeing a drop in Blu-ray/HD-DVD prices, and a winner will be crowned within the next 5.  I must say I will be disappointed if HD-DVD wins, mostly for the fact that my PS3 will be useless besides games (and yes I will get my mitts on one).

I for one am not buying either right now, because as of now the HD-DVD and Blu-ray are not to their full potential and wont reach it for some time.

I absolutely agree it could be sorted out, which is why I said "worst case scenerio".  I can't think of a reason why it wouldn't be possible from a technology standpoint, but I'm not the designer of either platform either, so I concede that there may be one or two things I don't know about it.

I'll have to say HD-DVD as I have no experience with Blu-Ray.
