Just another one of my 'I wonder' polls. Do you put two spaces after a period (full stop) when you type? Or just one?

I never was brought up to, I learnt it as one space for all. In fact, I never really noticed that people did it until a couple of years ago when I noticed my friend had put two spaces in the e-mail, and I thought it was just a glitch.

When I write reports in the Army (UK) we have a "Defence Writing Guide". It tells us all we need to do to make different documents, in crazy levels of detail. For example, Times New Roman has been replaced by Arial in all official correspondance and loose minutes, as dyslexics may have trouble with the serifs on other typefaces and fonts. Double spacing is highlighted as correct grammar for anything even remotely official.

double space after period, single after comma. Standard accepted proper grammar. Only exception to this is when I'm text messaging or something where characters are at a premium.

I, in the US, was taught double spacing after a period. Ironically, my clan forum filters double space out (I guess to break ASCII pictures) so it doesn't make a difference either way. I still do it though.

I WILL notice the difference, but not enough that I'm going to go on forums, correct people in posts, and create topics telling everyone to double space there. It's so minor, and I don't think it matters, as long as most every other rule of grammer is observed. For instance, USING the period once in awhile. Run-on sentences make me cry.

Double space after period. How many people that have responded to this are still 9th grade or lower? I don't think we were taught this until highschool because that was the first time we would have essays that needed to be typed instead of hand written. Anyway, I could care less either way when I'm reading, but I always put two spaces at the end just out of habit. See, I just did it right there.
