Digital Illusions and EA will bring in-game advertising into Digital Illusions’ next PC title Battlefield 2142

EA has signed an agreement with IGA to bring in-game dynamic advertising to selected titles in a move to provide cross platform in-game ad solutions for global advertisers. The initial title to incorporate dynamic advertising will be Battlefield 2142 when it launches in October.

Through the agreement, fans of the franchise will see new, realistic brand presence integrated into contextually relevant game environments. Digital Illusions is entitled to a share of all the revenues generated from the advertising featured in Battlefield 2142.

Oh well, i guess it had to happen , but if they do implement this the game will be subsidized  by the advertisers ? So we should pay less to purchase the product ???

Naaaaww  it wont happen will it ! ( Stop dreaming and get back to work)

Let's hope they make good use of this money and pump out some free content, like a few maps or something.

How long before someone complains to EA about it and they nerf it down to Mattel adverts?

Yeah, the vehicles have a giant billboard on them with an ad for Enzyte. The underside of a Titan has an ad skin for Trojan condoms.... yeah, I can see that

Just a question, are they just gonna put billboards up that keep the same image?, or something that changes like every 10 seconds?

I don't think it did have to happen, I frankly consider this the biggest load of crap I've seen yet. When I pay $50 for a game I damn well better own it (or if you're an IP snob...I own a license to use the software). I feel insulted as a consumer that a game company desires to milk me for more money...and the end result is I get NO BENEFIT out of it besides having to watch in-game ads. Maybe they'll flash in front of us the promise of in-game ads being used to provide us with new content...but I wouldn't buy that for a second. This is, in my opinion, a blatant money-grubbing move and it makes me feel quite used.

If this were to happen, I can guarantee it will be the only part of the game that is bug/crash free.

I think there are a lot of positive things to game advertising. For one it gives the game's industry a new way to make money.

EA, and DICE both are companies that are very LUCKY to still be around. If you are trying to develop a new game you are taking a huge risk. If you can pay your staff through advertising fees then I feel like it is worth it to have the annoyance to see a billboard for coke as I drive my walker past them to put huge energy blasts in the back of some noobs as they try to run for cover.

I am a very anti-advertisment sort of person, however we are not talking about sony spraypainting your house with a ps2 add. We are talking about small companies that might have no other way to develop games. That takes the dollars. This merely opens the doors to smaller companies to get some capital so that they can develop more games, at a higher quality.

However if the advertisment in someway impedes gameplay expect to see me here cursing the day I ever said it was a anything but bad.

Haha, I can see it now... your aircraft have flying banners.  dogfighting with a "Mike Calbert Toyota" banner fluttering behind you.

If this will make the game cost lower than 50$ Its sure is good. 50$ is actually a lot when games used to cost around 30$-40$ or even lower when they got old. Now games that are popular doesn't really change price for about 3 years.

I dont get is, how are these advertisements gonna fit the mood.  I mean I'm fine with advertising as long as it isn't a bombardment.  But, this is 136 years in the future, how many current companies are gonna be around then?  What companies that were around 136 years ago do we have now?  Something smells fishy...

IGA said it would avoid letting ads get stale and would keep them in context with game themes, avoiding situations such as promoting today's car models in futuristic battle or Old West gunfighter games.
Any ad in the middle of an ice-encrusted future city is going to be out of place. It's BS.
