Okay first off I'd like to say tha New Zealand's flag stinks.
I mean, c'mon. We've got the Union Jack nicked off the brits and the Southern Cross... that's it. Boring as Hell.
It also looks too much like the Australian flag, although theirs looks cooler because they have those funky spikey stars.
So it is a debate here whether to change the flag. Most people say yes, although I guess we're not bothered at the moment to pick which one. Here are the main contenders though, so what do you reckon.

Kind of a downer eh? Still, I suppose it has served us well.

Hundertwasser's Koru Flag

Hundertwasser was an Austrian painter who liked New Zealand a lot. He liked it so much the guy even built us a really cool toilet. Along with the toilet he also presented his own flag. I might also mention that my music hero Jon Toogood thinks this flag is the best.
(As a side note here are pictures of the toilet. Coolest damn toilet EVER! Outside, and Men's room.)

Tino Rangatiratanga flag

Okay so this is unofficially the Maori flag, but it is a contender anyway. I personally don't think it should be because it only reflects the Maori side of New Zealand, but hey, it looks kind of cool I guess.

I don't know much about this one, but aparently it's a contender. Good on it for keeping the old, (Southern Cross,) with a bit of the present, (Silver Fern,) and even including a bit of the Tino Rangatiratanga flag.

Silver Fern flag

This is the one chosen by the "NZ Flag Trust" who rally to change the flag. The Silver Fern is really a sporting emblem whic is it's main critisism, but it's a pretty cool symbol anyway. Styled quite differently from the generic "All Black" silver fern. I reckon it's pretty cool.

This is quite a cool one. It's got a prominant Silver Fern nd keeps the Southern-cross, but dosn't look as crappy as that other one...

Yeah, this is one I made. Sure it's a hybrid of some of the others, (namely the Silver Fern and the Silver Fern/Southern-Cross one if it wasn't already painfully obvous,) but I reckon the combination works.

Your flag takes the cake although i would replace the black with the blue in the Southern-cross/Silver Fern flag.

Souther cross/silver fern got my vote. I like yours Ty but the black doesn't work for me.

If you included your revised design with the blue replacing the black then it would definitely get my vote.

I see nothing wrong with the current flag. It may be a lot like Australia's, but we DO have a lot in common with the West Island, especially when it comes to April 25th and all it means.

I always wondered why New Zealand didn't join the commonwealth. I mean, we offered... Tyferra's flag is the best of them although the silver fern one definitely makes me think of New Zealand.

Giving away too much power, less money, and the Maori seem to be big reasons. Given how Australian Aboriginals were treated I'm sure the Maori are glad we didn't (not taking a dig, just saying).

Just imagine if we did join though...our combined EEZ would be huge, and Australia would once again have some rugby trophies

When Charlie takes the throne chances are NZ, Canada and Australia will become republics. Charlie reckon's it's a good idea and says nothing will change with relationship between the countries it'll just be a symbolic thing.

God im getting real sick of this "change the flag, Change the anthem, we need to be a republic" bullshit.(not intended as a dig at you Ty)

I cant see a problem with the current flag (or anthem, or method of government) Change for change sake is ridiculous, but, If i had to pick a new flag then Id go for the plain black silver fern model.

One of the concerns I have about the movement to change the flag is I get teh feeling that there are quite a few trainspotters who want to be able to say "Yeah I changed the flag" etc.

Tell you what, if they choose my flag you owe me a beer - and NO CANTERBURY DRAUGHT!
Stuff tastes like ditchwater man...

Change for changes sake is foolish. If you kept doing that you'd just change everything like Stryyker changes sigs. Still, the real question is whether the flag really communicates how we are as New Zealanders. People are reasoning that the flag dosn't represent us any more.

Anyone else in other countries have a similar thing?

Its a deal - I dont touch that CD crap (dont tell anybody though, theyll lynch me if they hear that round here) if I can avoid it anyway!!!! I'm a North Islander that moved south for varsity and now they wont let me back

Seriously though, If you look at most countries flags they are representative of their history, and their place in the world. I think our current one does this well.

Definately the Southern-cross/Silver Fern flag, i think it has all the characterisitcs that a flag sould have, and most people would be able to identify it as the NZ flag.

Personally I do like Tyferra's flag a lot but I think the Tino Rangartiratanga flag would be my choice. Better to go with an ancient indigenous flag to represent your country and its culture than anything else. The Ireland flag should really be a yellow Irish harp on a blue background but we ended up with a tricolour to reflect the Republican nature of the revolution and to symbolise the then-divided community. I would have preferred the harp on the blue.

PS Why would anyone want to deprecate their country by adorning their flag with the flag of some colonial power? It kind of affects my respect for a country when I see that.

CD used to be a good beer, its gone downhill in recent years...I've been partial to a bit of the export dry lately, its good stuff and not a lot of people seem to drink it. Where abouts are you studying vedds, lincoln or canterbury? I'm doing COSC and PHIL at canterbury at the mo

Im not studying anymore - gave it away in 2001 Still got 30 points to go to get a damn degree . Was at Canterbury, spent many an hour at the Foundry. Export dry isnt bad at all, although i prefer Plain old DB or Speights.
