I am currently running with a Geforce 6600, which is a complete lump of toss.

My MoBo only supports AGP cards at the moment, so I was wondering what AGP card I should go for, with a budget of no more than £250 ish.

The rest of my pc is quite high spec, but the graphics card is as useful as tits on a fish.

Help please

PS and please don't post "Haha crappy card, n00b !!!11!!!!!11", just constructive suggestions and advice please.

ATi drivers blow. Get a 7800 GS or a 6800 GT if that's too expensive. I have a 6800 GT OC and it rocks, but I will be ditching it for a new mobo and video card fairly soon (it can run med/high and I wanna run all high).

Nvidia 7800GS AGP8x 256MB 250-300€ (maybe factory oc´ed)
Nvidia 7800GS AGP8x 512MB 350-399€ (benchmarks like the PCI-E 7800GT but pretty expensive)

nothing more, nothing less!

This is what I'm running here

It's expensive but it's good, is actually a 7900 GPU (24 pipeline). If you've got the money spare then go for it, but personally I would recommend saving a bit more and swapping out your mobo and going with PCI-E.

Word of caution, this beastie requires a minimum 450W (I think) PSU to ensure it has sufficient power, plus the power cable that comes with it requires 2, that's 2, 4 pin HDD power connectors so you will need these free.

I only had a poxy 250W PSU in my rig so I had to buy a new 600W one. The power connector on the graphics card is a PCI-E one so if your PSU has PCI-E support (ie, the little 6 pin power plugs) you can use one of these instead.

Just something to bear in mind.

Nope, that's mine apparently. "The best AGP card on the market" probably the best AGP card that will ever be made. I'm pretty sure they won't be making any more.

Then purchase away, my good fellow.

I can highly recommend dabs.com. They are actually part of the BT group so they're a pretty reputable company.

EVGA 7800GS, 7800GS OC or 7800GS Superclocked (u can clock urself to a superclock if u desire too)

Core clock on 7800GS = 400, OC = 430,  superclocked = 460
Memory clock = 1300, OC = 1350 (I think, might be 1400), superclocked = 1450
Bandwidth is around to 40, OC is about 44 and superclocked is approx. 48
Price is about $ 250 for 7800GS, about $ 275 for OC and about $ 300 for superclocked

All very good cards, the highest you can go with AGP
I have the EVGA 7800GS OC and can run BF2 on all high without much of a problem
Hope this helps you out

The 7800GS+ is already a 7900 GPU, I don't see what else they could do, but I'll bow down to your superior knowledge Slayer.

Your right Doc. Its already a 7900GT GPU, but as the 7800GS GPU´s Nvidia puts non selected chips on the AGP boards. There are only rumors, and like I´ve said before, nothing official about a 7900GS atm. But what I´ve heard this will be a real 7900GT chip.

Vroom vroom then. But my wife would castrate me if I bought something else now. I'm struggling to get her to let me buy a new 2ms response monitor.

Wish you all the best for your new monitor

i thought the phrase was as useful as tits on a bull, but who am i to argue?

Anyway, i'm stuck in the same situation, got a system that i built bit less than 3 years ago and i went all out when i put it together.  everything in the system is still good, but the video card has fallen behind a good bit compared to newer cards out there.  The major question is spend a good bit on the best agp i can find or shell out a bit more and upgrade to a PCI-express capable motherboard....i think i'm going to wait a bit for another game i'll be playing when it comes out and upgrade the motherboard too.  I really dread doing it, going to have to redo everything but i think it is the better chioce for the long run.

i've got a radeon 9800 pro 128mb card, i've got my settings on med with a few things turned on high and i'm happy with the performance, but of couse i do want more

Good points man! PCI-E is absolutley the future. And always keep in mind: a good PCI-E mobo and as example a 7900GT 256MB is around 400€, a 7800GS(+) AGP is around 300-400€ also. But thb, the chance for further AGP support are less than 10%. On the other side, if you upgrade to PCI-E, a full reinstall is necessary (but who cares, Windoofs ftw!!! )

Other thing to consider is if you have a prebuilt rig chances are your OS is keyed to your mobo so swapping out your mobo is gonna cost you a new OS as well.

I went the cheapest root to get me a decent rig for now that hopefully will last me 1.5-2 years then I'll build an entirely new rig.

Depends on what money you've got. Easy option is the top end AGP card but sooner or later it will be obsolete architecture. Slightly more expensive but more futureproof option is the mobo swap out and PCI-E card.

This is not a decision which can be made for you so think long and hard about what you are comfortable doing.
