Hi,
I'm really confused. I'm trying to run at max quality (1152x res). When I create a 64 map server, I get avg 70-100 fps. It never drops below 60.

In a public 64 player server, at the same graphically intense spots, I get 20-40 fps, around 30 avg, which is <40> less fps than on my own server, MINIMUM! I discovered today that when I lower my internet rate from t1 to cable, I get about 10 more fps in an actual online game(not my own server), but this was only temporary. Overall my avg fps is probably 40 (max quality).

Here are my system specs:

DFI lanparty nf4 Ultra-d (bios?)
AMD Opteron 165 toledo (dual core @ 1.8 ghz)
Corsiar TWINX2048-4000pt 2x1 GB DDR 500(PC 4000)@ddr400 (with the same loose pc 4000 memory timings)
eVGA 7800 gt co (running@ pci-x 2x right now. Gonna send it in for repairs and see if I can get it running @pci-x 16x again)
x-fi xtrememusic
WD WD2500KS 250 gig SATA
Nec ND-3550A 16x8x16x DVD+R/RW IDE
OCZ Powerstream 520w with adjustable power rails
Windows XP professional w/SP2

Even though I have my 7800 gt running in pci-x 2x mode right now, I had an avg of 40 fps with my 7900 gt before I gave it away. To add to that, I read in MANY reviews that the 7800 gt was capable of running bf2 maxed out with an avg above 60 fps(and yes, even with fsaa and af on), and that dual-core processors performed just as well as higher-clocked single core processors, when you maxed out the graphics settings.

So, I really need to know what's causing such a big decrease in performance from playing on my own 64 map empty server, to a public 64-player server with many people on it.

I've considered upgrading, but I really don't know which component upgrade will guarentee to fix my problem. A new video card, or a new cpu? Right now, the 3800+ venice cpu( 2.4 ghz) is *very* cheap, going for about $120. I can get that as soon as December. Then there's the 7950 gt, which is about $300, and the soonest possible time I can get one of that is January. So choosing the right upgrade path will save me both money and time.

I would also like to mention that I'm looking for 60 fps avg in bf2142 at max settings(just like bf2), if not, a little less than max settings, as I understand bf2142 has graphical tweaks to increase visual quality.

What should I do? What's causing my problem?

Thanks for any help in advance:p

*edit* I've confirmed that my low fps problem has to do with how many people are on the server. 64 player server=40> fps avg. 32 player server= 60< fps avg. Same map. My download speeds are 350 kb/s, and upload speed is 60 kb/s. So not sure if it's my connection. Grr any help? TY:p

*another edit* what confuses me the most is that there's plenty people who run at maxed settings, with lower-end equipment than I have, and have better fps!!!

Well for one you have a pretty good system and should have no problems playing on high.

There are only two things that I can think of.

First and probably the issue is heat.

You have two 1.8G processors and a decent card generating alot of heat.

It's possible that something is down-clocking. Try running a temperature monitor program during play.

Second is the X-Fi card. I've heard of people having issues with some program called cthelper.exe. It's not needed and a Biach to get rid of. My cousin was having all kinds of problems until he deleted cthelper.exe, basically what happens is it could create a memory leak and start hoggin memory.

Also CThelper.exe or whatever the creative program is not needed for the card to work properly.

Anyways get rid of those extra programs you have running an buy a couple extra fans. You should play just fine on high.

Thx for your help Vjs:)

My cpu runs around 38 c when not gaming, but I'll dl mobo monitor and see if it rises excessively:)

Also, I know that while I'm bf2'n, about 100 mbs above 1 gig is being used. I have 2 gigs(well 1 stick in right now, cuz I made a failed attempt to oc, and had to take out one stick to help fix the problem), so I might be good in that respect, hehe:) I'll toss the .exe in the garbage though and see how things run.

Thanks you!

Windows XP 32-Bit can recognise 4GB of RAM. 2 to the 32  = 4GB

There can be issues with getting XP to recognise more than 3GB, but it can be done perfectly ok, I've done it.
I'm not sure if it will work on Home Edition though.

64-Bit Windows recognises much more, early Athlon 64 CPUs supported 40-Bit physical addressing and 48-Bit virtual addressing. That's a whole load more RAM, I can't remember what XP-64 supports, but it's a LOT.

I can't see how having 4GB of RAM will make a difference to anything, but I don't know how much data gets loaded into memory on ultra high settings. On high, on big maps, it's about 1.5GB, for which 2GB is plenty. How much more detailed are theultra sttings then?

Also having more RAM than the game uses, for example 4GB playing on high settings, I don't see how load times would improve. If you can fit all the relevant data onto memory without using a swapfile then that's as much RAM as you need. Having extra empty space won't speed anything up. You want quality over quantity and frequency over CAS latencies.

If you want good load times, use a RAID array.
