it’s got everywhere and in everything, like grime, or ... or ... surplus value. this truly is the pathogen of global capitalism. this is Nature’s way of saying we should all go back to monocultural ethnostates with outdoor exercise regimes and national breeding programmes. God is cross with jewish internationalism.

dilbert has been silent for a few days so you know he has it at this point.

even the whacko right are starting to get antsy at trump. jay must be feeling a very silly boy. trump also 'compares coronavirus to "the regular flu," indicating he doesn't get the difference'. how surprising! i wonder where jay gets his information from. it surely can't be the WHO stats which currently show coronavirus as somewhere between 20x and 25x more deadly than flu (to say nothing of its transmissibility and the short-term stress it will load on health systems compared to flu).

sobering reading.

i guess what we should really be doing is still racialising this issue, and making out that the chinese uniquely have disgusting eating habits/are dirty and unhygienic/are politically corrupt.
One stupid doctor, compared with a nation which slaughters exotic and dangerous creature for their scales which have no value whatever, and whose premier decided not to tell the world about an epidemic for a month.

that's one news story. what i am trying to say is that human beings have the same propensity to be stupid, reckless or negligent regardless of their ethnicity or culture, dilbert.

and we've already been around the loop with your 'unnecessary' animal contact talk. you're a vegan so all animal contact is gratuitous. the west frequently deals with swine flu and any other number of zoonotic diseases from the fact that, yes, we use animal products.

I'm mostly vegetarian, not vegan.

The world could easily cut meat production by 90% and it would make no difference to anyone, no more pigs, no more swine flu.

a number of the most recent and deadly outbreaks of swine flu originated in iran.

iranians don't eat pork.

figure it out, dilbert. your pet theories are fucking useless.

I thought they originated in Mexican pig farms feeding the gluttons north of the border.

If they didn't originate in swine then they weren't swine flu outbreaks really were they?

what do you propose we do about 'avian' flu? shoot all the birds out of the sky? they tried that in china once. sparrows transmit disease? (they don't) easy! kill all the sparrows!

it created one of the biggest man-made famines in history.

If they didn't originate in swine then they weren't swine flu outbreaks really were they?
it's almost as if you don't understand the first thing about viral outbreaks and epidemiology. i'm going to go with the experts on this one, pip pip!

Probably stop people living in hen houses, stop keeping hens in slums, stop people taking live hens to live markets where they mix with dozens of other kinds of animals and are slaughtered in grossly insanitary conditions next to live animals, people and homes.

Also stop uncontrolled use of antibiotics in chicken farming.

if only the entire human race transitioned to eating an unproblematic, non-ecologically devastating, non-socially disruptive crop like soy!!!

i was being heavily ironic. soy planting, like any other fashionable cash-crop plugged by the vegan lot, is responsible for huge amounts of ecological devastation in south america and elsewhere, as well as upending the economies and livelihoods of the people there.

just something to bear in mind the next time dilbert starts blaming global pandemics on 'over-consumption of protein'. plant proteins are hardly a godsend. btw, most soya is processed using hexane, a neurotoxic petrochemical solvent. neat!

i wonder what's a bigger risk to the average person on this planet: a once-a-century zoonotic pandemic or climate catastrophe wrought by cutting down the amazon? luckily the resident genius engineer can run the numbers.

i imagine the solution ultimately comes down to population, as ever, in which the non-dilberts of this world must be culled and made to stop breeding.

Did I mention soy once?

We've had 5 or 6 zoonotic epidemics in the last century IIRC.
We were very very luck Ebola, with a mortality of 50%, didn't escape. Several medical people did carry it back, we missed a world altering bullet there.

I'm not hearing either of you com up with any solutions.

uziq just criticises, creativity being hard.

Jay gripes but his solution to everything is to stick with the status quo.

an epidemic is not a pandemic. if you're going to quote my post, at least get it basically right.

ebola is nowhere near as transmissible as coronavirus, nor were SARS/MERS. it wouldn't have been a 'world-altering' bullet because its contagiousness is far easier to isolate and control, especially in western countries with proper health systems. ebola was localised to a very specific region whose disease prevention was nil, modern healthcare minimal, and whose burial practices involved close proximity and touching the dead. that would not pertain in the rest of the world.

but yes, let's stick with ebola for a minute, a zoonotic illness that was transferred to the human population by the eating of wild bushmeat. i'd love to hear your suggestions as to how we stop human beings globally, particularly people in the global south or economically deprived places, from eating available protein. ebola had nothing to do with factory farming, nothing to do with your 'over-consumption of protein' and our dietary habits, nothing to do with chinese medicine or 'unnecessary' farming/harvesting of animal products, etc. it was a person eating locally sourced, available protein. how are you going to prevent that, exactly, dingus? a global ban on foraging? build a wall and get the africans to pay for it?

like i said, zoonotic diseases are a fact of life. we can mitigate against their spread by re-thinking global supply chains, quarantine measures, etc. but we cannot eradicate them. it's pie-in-the-sky hysterical foolishness from the 'lentils and pulses' crowd living in upper-middle class enclaves smelling of patchouli oil.

Epidemics can become pandemics you mong, that was the point.

Ebola is one example, there are plenty of others and others we probably don't even know about yet, and they can all mutate.

We can mitigate against their spread by quarantining countries which insist on consuming bushmeat and banning transport of bushmeat to third countries.

Since the outbreak began, Chinese authorities have shut down 20,000 farms raising peacocks, civet cats, porcupines, ostriches, and wild geese
Seems like a no-brainer.

Yes, zoonotic diseases exist just because some people eat animals that aren't pigs, cows, or chickens (the three animals that have never made anyone sick, ever). Illness also nothing at all to do with food standards and safety.

We have food standards and safety, and farms and slaughterhouses kept well remote from the population with checks and controls at multiple stages of the delivery process.

We aren't slaughtering exotic animals in the basements of apartment blocks, out in the street or in people's kitchens.

A U.S. senator is under self quarantine. He came in contact with someone who went to the Conservative Political Action Conference with Wuhan flu. Trump was also in attendance.

it’s just so much more realistic to reinforce a ban on foraging, worldwide. dilbert has sorted this zoonotic disease thing!

It's funny that they shut off the stock market after it dropped 7% or 1,800 points. I know that that represents trillions of dollars worth of wealth but the numbers are fake. The high stock market has been disconnected from the reality of most American's economic lives.

what is real, however, is the saudis cynically using the opportunity to grab the world by the balls and give it a good squeeze.

i honestly have no idea why the US, we here in the UK, etc. turn a blind eye to the saudis. well, the answer is plainly simple, but it's not a very satisfying one.

I am hesitant to lay a bunch of blame today on the Saudis. It's not the foreign oil baron's fault the U.S. economy is held up by debt and low wage workers.

The head of the Port Authority — who has been visiting local airports and other transit facilities — has the coronavirus, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Monday.

Cuomo said he himself “could have been in contact” with infected PA executive director Rick Cotton but hasn’t been tested because he’s an “improbable positive,” meaning he isn’t likely to have the virus.

Cotton is now quarantined, the governor told reporters.
Highest ranking confirmed case? For you foreigners who don't know what the Port Authority is, it is the interstate organization the controls the NYC and NJ ports, bridges, tunnels, and airports. The virus has reached Manhattan.
