I think relying on parents with poor organizational skills to teach America's youth proper organizational skills is probably a mistake. Prolonging the cycle, as it were.

Xi Jinping has fostered a "China against the world" narrative, reminding his people never to forget what is seen as 100 years of humiliation by foreign powers.
The most dangerous thing in all this is not the pandemic, its China's response to the response to the pandemic.

They have features of both Japan and Germany in the '30s. Or soon will when China loses 30% of its economy back to the west, or at least out of China, half their citizens have been bankrupted, unwelcome outside their own country and being dictated to on what they can and can't eat, their regional ambitions are faced with military blockade.
Its a nasty mix and going to end badly.

One cough and you're frog-marched to a clinic.
it's funny how quickly this came to the west, and how gleefully western police forces took up their new powers.
Whats funny is how the Chinese were doing this to their own citizens and simultaneously calling any nation which blocked Chinese travelers racist, and how they've now turned their focus on non-chinese.

Re Trump, Jay, its amazing how simpletons think the world is simple and can be fixed with simple solutions without involving experts.
Its a strange phenomenon that people buy a product, flick through the manual, then they're on youtube playing the expert on how to set up and use the thing. How does this kind of thinking develop?

The comments are hilarious.

I'm not saying that there's a magic solution. Just that in-person education is probably helpful for more people (re: "schools should stay closed and classes should all be remote"). Also that schools should probably teach stuff like organizational skills that some kids probably won't be learning at home, to give more people a better shot at things.

the ban on china was asymmetrically applied and, where it was applied, totally ineffective. i can see why they'd complain about their economic interests being hit when the same caution wasn't being exercised elsewhere.

in case it needs to be reiterated to you:
  • the only country in europe to blanket ban travel to china, and the one to do it most quickly, was italy. which then went on to have the worst early-phase outbreak of any nation.
  • trump began to ban and place strictures on china, but analysis has shown that covid-19 arrived in new york from europe, a place with no early-phase restrictions.

If China hadn't kept it secret for 1-2 months a ban on travel out of China would have been perfectly reasonable, like, you know, they themselves banned people from travelling out of Wuhan.

Australia has done well, even if late. Quarantining all travel from China then from everywhere.

Meanwhile America will have more cases than the next four nations in the next day or two despite a one month head start to use for planning.

I don't understand why Italy had so many Chinese immigrant and guest workers. Italy had a structural unemployment rate of 10ish percent before this took place. There is no reason why there should be immigrants laboring in factories instead of Italians.

The issue with the rising sinophobia is that a lot of innocent Asian westerners are bearing the brunt of it rather than the Chinese government and the white western leaders who sold their economies to the Chinese.

Unless you plan to also punish the 1% for their collaboration with the Chinese, you aren't being serious about containing the dragon.

In order to control the narrative surrounding the coronavirus pandemic, China is cracking down on the publication of academic research about the origin of the novel coronavirus, documents published online by Chinese universities show, according to The Guardian report

Websites of two leading Chinese universities appear to have published and then recently removed pages which reference a new policy requiring COVID-19 related academic papers to undergo extra vetting before being submitted for publication.

...

A senior research fellow of Chinese studies at Monash University Kevin Carrico said he wasn’t aware of any recent change to rules for academic
research in China but the documents were consistent with efforts to control the pandemic’s narrative. “They are seeking to transform it from a massive disaster to one where the government did everything right and gave the rest of the world time to prepare,” he said.

“There is a desire to a degree to deny realities that are staring at us in the face … that this is a massive pandemic that originated in a place that the Chinese government really should have cleaned up after Sars,” Carrico added.

For what it's worth, Bill Gates agreed with you when people started fishing for an endorsement of permanent online learning from him. (A lot of $ to be made)

I think elementary schools should be kept around because they do perform the basic socializing of children that is necessary. But I feel by high school so much of your personality is already formed that it is obvious what direction a lot of the derp kids are going. And it is a waste and also unfair to the kids who want to do well to have the derps around fucking things up. I am not that far removed from high school and only need to look at Facebook to reaffirm by beliefs.

I love being a teacher. I get to nerd out with history all day. But too much of the profession is "classroom management". Too much time and resources are spent getting Tyrone to sit quietly and Kyle to not knock off IQ points with drugs.

china is fully in political containment mode now, no doubt about it. i was posting WhatsApp chats with communist party family members discussing how US soldiers and people from outside were responsible for a 'foreign virus'. is anyone surprised by this? no. china is an authoritarian regime and will preserve itself at all costs.

that still doesn't mean their early complaints about travel bans being pointless were incorrect. they were evidently pointless. like pissing onto a dumpster fire.

I personally learned maybe 10% of what I would've learned in a classroom setting in the online classes I took. I think it's the PowerPoint slides that make taking notes redundant that contribute most to the loss. I need social interaction and physical note taking.

Something I did notice regarding my being judgmental on Facebook: a significant amount of the white, Hispanic, and Arab kids who were fuck ups turned things around and live comfortable and productive lives. Usually in the trades but work is work. The African American fuck ups? Yikes. Even the well put together black kids are still "yikes". I have no idea what happens there that results in not even a sliver of their community doing well like some of the Arabs and Hispanics pull off.

Probably has to do with prettier women.

To learn anything I have to take notes, then rewrite them after the class.
Then they're legible and I've checked I understood them.

We know that now, Chinese tourists had already spread it to Italy and this the rest of the world, but better to be conservative no?

china factory workers in italy, not tourists. weird how you are like jay in always reaching for the lowest-hanging tabloid trope, isn't it?

jay ranting about the global jet setting elite when it arrived in NYC from europeans, and the PNW from poor migrant workers.

you going on about pushy rude chinese tourists defiling europe when it's factory workers, etc.

yawn. we live in a globalised world, period. people have been warning about this scenario for a very long time. trying to contain a virus with a 10-day asymptomatic incubation period is a vain fantasy -- unless you effectively shut down the world economy immediately. selectively banning certain flights to certain countries is tantamount to racism when the same prudence isn't exercised elsewhere. how stupid is it to ban incoming chinese over a month into a global pandemic and still allow white europeans in?

I condensed them into revision sheets before exams, just reading and re-reading has little impact on me.

Why did the Chinese quarantine Wuhan? Made no sense.

Australia banned everyone quite quickly, Australian states are now essentially sealed off, cities from the country etc, no racism involved.

I'd like to see China quarantined until they shut down their markets and stop eating wildlife and pets, same for Indonesia.

i cannot be bothered to go over it again. you're fully into 'china is waiting to start world war 3' mode and have been for about 30 pages.

quarantines of cities are nothing new in epidemic response. nobody knew then how long it survived on surfaces, or how the long incubation period. you ascribe everything to some sinister motive. 'china wanted to let infected people out into the world intentionally and cried wolf about racism'. jesus christ get a grip.

Iran and China have had the worst last year imaginable. Throughout the 2000s their economic, political, and military growth was actually getting scary. Now? It's a mess in both places especially Iran. And for all of the U.S. problems, I think our economic situation might be better than China's since people will still accept our money, media, and influence without worrying about getting sick.

And our problems with Russia seemed to have died down under the Trump administration. They seemed to have lost a lot of interest in promoting conflict in the Middle East and elsewhere now that our leadership won't even pretend to care about their internal authoritarianism and corruption. Clinton might have just been that bad even globally.

Honestly this is just an example of gun people being gun people. They can be very religious, cliquey, and snide about their opinions and methods, even when there are other viable opinions and methods. Some of them will even talk your ear off about the merits and demerits of science fiction firearms that probably use materials and tech not invented, discovered, or sufficiently miniaturized yet just because it came up briefly.

I know a few "experts at everything" personalities. Very easy people to trigger.

What gets me are the comments saying that they don't know about guns, and then proceeded to offer up the way they would have addressed the issue.
