you only have the demand for that level of manufacturing (and at that high a cost in the short-term) during wars or national emergencies.

you know, expanding the state to get workers to constantly produce goods is akin to ... some political systems americans don't like naming.

Countries are at least going to put the facility in place, even my sister's school-teacher friends are talking about this.

At the start of WW2 Australia realised they couldn't produce explosives, gunpowder etc. so they built an ammonia plant, gun powder lines etc.
While Britain has closed theirs and is now wholly dependent on Belgium - and were nearly cut off during the Gulf War - Australia is still going strong.

Good luck getting ammo deliveries after Brexit chaps.

That and the average person is not going to buy something with a 'Made in PRC' sticker on it if they can avoid it.

i think your little fantasy of people eschewing all china-made goods after covid-19 is going to safely be contained to the comments section of your local outback newspaper. frankly i don't think people give a toss what the times of australia's letters page is saying -- the unreconstructed 'white australia' types are enjoying one last short spring of apoplexy before all contracting corona themselves and dying off en masse in the winter.

as far as i'm concerned this is just old white boomers going through the stages of collective grief. we have denial, then anger directed outwards as part of that sublimated denial. there will be further reckonings down the road. the china-man can't be blamed for everything.

plus, if your coal and fossil fuel policy is anything to go by, there's only one real speaker in australia, and that's cash. money talks. i'm sure your average citizen, shopping for convenience or as part of their disposable-everything consumerist culture of affordable technology, yearly gadget replacement, seasonal fast fashion, etc. are going to voluntarily start paying 4x the mark-up for everyday items to avoid a 'made in china' sticker.

Chat about Chinese production and exports unexpectedly blew up in my face the other day. Pure hatred for the (realistic) concept of trade with them, from a guy wearing at least three articles of clothing made in China. Super startling at first, and then it wasn't. It feels like I've underestimated just how much vitriol has been building up. Maybe I should read Breitbart to catch up on the latest propaganda.

it's a moot point anyway, as 'made in china' goods are only the tip of the iceberg. the entire electronics supply chain is in china. all your fancy high-end nordic hi-fi companies aren't making their own capacitors.

Japanese capacitors are all the rage anyway. Sometimes a criterion for builders' component selection.

21-year-old who posted about not social distancing gets coronavirus 3/26
https://nypost.com/2020/03/26/21-year-o … oronavirus & fox

A 21-year-old Tennessee woman who bragged on social media about not taking the coronavirus outbreak seriously has been diagnosed with the deadly illness, according to a report.

Ireland Tate joked about not following instructions to stay home and practice social distancing amid the pandemic just days before she fell sick, news station WZTV reported.

In a social media video, the Nashville resident told her followers that she’s “aware that we’re supposed to be self-quarantining and social distancing” to “keep everyone safe” — but that she wasn’t worried.

“Cool. I get it. I just don’t think that I’m going to get the virus,” Tate said in the video.

But just days later, Tate found herself suffering from symptoms associated with the dangerous bug and tested positive.

“It feels like someone is sitting on my chest at all times,” she said. “It’s really hard to breathe. I’ve coughed until my throat has bled.”

Tate said she likely got the virus from a pal in her group of friends and she’s now warning other young people to stay home.

“While it may not be affecting you, you could be affecting someone’s grandma or grandpa or aunt or uncle or sister,” Tate told the outlet.
Lung damage seen in recently asymptomatic coronavirus patient 3/26
https://nypost.com/2020/03/26/lung-dama … us-patient (video)

Disturbing video shows how COVID-19 ravaged the lungs of a patient who had been asymptomatic just days earlier.

Dr. Keith Mortman, the chief of thoracic surgery at George Washington University Hospital, said the hospital created a 360-degree image of the lungs of a 59-year-old male patient who had been generally healthy except for a history of high blood pressure, CNN reported.

In the scans, the yellow areas, which highlight the infected and inflamed regions, cover both of the lungs.

“This is a guy who’s minding his own business and gets it,” Mortman told CNN. “If we were to repeat the [360-degree virtual reality images] now, that is one week later, there is a chance that the infection and inflammatory process could be worse.”

We're all in lockdown, moron. It's not stopping anything.
it's been the number one news story globally for over a month and jay still fundamentally doesn't understand how viruses work.

i mean you could read a précis that pops up on youtube or gmail when you open the app at this point and get a better understanding.

the numbers aren't going to drop within a week of adopting a lockdown because people who got infected weeks ago are still presenting at hospitals

you require 3-4 weeks of intensive care ventilation to recover from second-stage severe pneumonia.

but viruses can't be exponential, sensei!!!
No, you don't understand. People are ignoring it. They're going about their business. They're piling into subway cars. They're playing sports in the parks. They're traveling to other parts of the country and bringing it with them. The white collar people are all sitting at home in self quarantine and the poor are going about their business without a care in the world. They released a few hundred thousand ghetto teenagers from schools with nothing to do. Think they're gonna sit in front of an ipad all day? No, they're out playing basketball and spreading this shit.

Like I said above, social responsibility is nil. We've got idiots coughing on each other because they think it's funny. I asked one of my clients at work the other day if he's feeling sick at all and he coughed on me on purpose and said he's fine. Someone purposely coughed on $25,000 worth of groceries at a supermarket because they wanted to be a dick. This country has a very small part of the population that actually gives a fuck about anything and pulls everyone else along, and a vast majority of grifters and assholes. Our government is incompetent and filled to the brim with the latter.

You all keep giving me a hard time about my libertarian views, but it's because of shit like this that I hold them. I am a socially responsible person. I care about the well being of others. I go out of my way to help people. I want to be left alone because I'm tired of getting fucked over by the rest of the idiot population and their shitty government that lets them be careless and dependent.

Last time I looked at it all propellant was sourced abroad.

Here we go

The loss of our last remaining indigenous capacity for propellant manufacture makes the issue of the adequacy of our war stocks more pressing.

...

A principal complaint of the trade unions in connection with the modular charge system contract was that the MoD had not negotiated such firm guarantees of propellant supply before it rejected the workshare option. Nor had such arrangements been discussed with the firms or countries that offer alternative supplies. We raised this with our MoD witnesses, who told us that because the capabilities existed in other friendly countries the Department had not thought such discussions necessary.

...

The MoD suggests that the capabilities to manufacture ammunition and propellants are not strategic capabilities of such significance that they need to be located in the UK.
https://publications.parliament.uk/pa/c … /27405.htm

During one of the gulf wars the belgians refused to supply artillery propellant, I think, causing problems.
But I'm sure all the geniuses who consistently fail to deliver any military project have this all under control.

I've had the same. A bit phlegmy, but no fever. I've had that belt tightening around the chest feeling.

I called the health department to schedule a test after I found out I was exposed on Tuesday, they finally got back to me yesterday and I'm scheduled for a test on Monday.

I honestly really hope I have it right now, because whatever I have is mild.

every other country in the world has managed to follow its government's advice just fine.

the problem is that the messaging from the white house has been mixed, if not negligent. for weeks trump was denying it was a problem.  he was insisting it would 'just go away'. he has questioned the advice of the experts and frequently publicly disagreed with his head scientific advisor. denialism of the problem has merged with official incompetence and lack of action in public health. all the while, fox news, like a faithful mouthpiece, was telling its large and faithful viewership that the coronavirus was a 'liberal panic', a 'hysteria', a plot foisted by 'upper-east side elites' on the poor average joe. all completely against the official advice of medical experts. fox persisted in this line for weeks.

the first news of 'social distancing measures' were met by crowds of trump-followers gathering together to 'trigger the libs'. people were rejoicing about new york being the epicentre of the outbreak. great! those elites are getting wiped! you can't make up this level of stupid. what causes people to behave this way, when they didn't anywhere else in the world? hmm, make u think!

Nothing to do with Ayn Rand, this country was founded on land speculation, gold rushes and every other get-rich-quick scheme imaginable. Selfish from the start.

I'm libertarian because I still believe in the Enlightenment ideals of freedom, self determination etc. These ideals are dependent on individual social responsibility and trust. An ideal free society is not the Mad Max universe that you imagine. It's a society where the rules are light because you don't have to worry about your neighbor fucking you over. It is a bit Nordic, but without the government enforcing everything. Rule by peer pressure and reputation.

And yes, I'm fully aware that it is untenable as a belief system. It definitely does not work in a transient, globalized world.

Really, that's the crux of the issue though. Everything and everyone is transient. We all pile by the millions into cities where we are completely anonymous and it allows us to be as big of an asshole as we want to be (outside of work) because there is no peer pressure to keep us in line. Cities are dehumanizing.

it seems bolsonaro in brazil is taking the trump approach, too, whilst their numbers are in the low 100s. 'it'll go away', 'it's not a problem', 'we're a strong and healthy nation', 'what disease?' perhaps their climate will lend him some respite, but it'll be interesting to see how it goes there, too, in the next month or so.

willed ignorance and official neglect when a virus is in the low-100s means you're going to have 10,000s withinn 2 weeks, 100,000s soon after that. because, you know, jay, NOVEL VIRUSES FOR WHICH WE HAVE NO PROTECTION OR IMMUNITY SPREAD EXPONENTIALLY.

It's not Trump voters out in the parks. The vast majority of NYC natives are moronic members of the underclass living in public housing or other ghettos. They've been coddled by the political class in this state for so long that they know they can get away with anything. Mayor trying to shut down the parks? Just scream racism and he'll back down.

All those white people living in Park Slope or Williamsburg or the Upper West Side are not natives, and they're behaving responsibly.

This is a class issue. Our poor people are atrocious.

"Ah, you miserable creatures! You who think that you are so great! You who judge humanity to be so small! You who wish to reform everything! Why don't you reform yourselves? That task would be sufficient enough."

you do realize that every country on earth has varied social classes and a political spectrum, right?
