If old people want to die they don't need to wait for the virus to take them.

Aren't 85% of healthcare costs spent on people over 70?

Leeches.

it's so funny watching 'the greatest country on earth', the 'city on the hill', the shining beacon, the free-est, bestest, greatest democracy ever ... now seriously consider just sacrificing its elderly because they don't want to close the office for a month. ah, the american dream! work hard your whole life, save, be an honest, good person, look forward to your retirement ... actually, no, because your society is so money-obsessed that everyone regards senior citizens as sacrificial goats on the altar of capital.

70+? wow those people are unproductive. we should just let this virus take care of them.

sounds like a eugenics nightmare from a totalitarian state.

it can't be a coincidence that all the east asian countries, e.g. taiwan, south korea, china, japan, who mass-mobilised and got a grip on their contagion all have cultures that place an utmost value on the elderly, both within the family unit and as a society for their wisdom. meanwhile america ignored all advice (the UK is just as culpable, here, too) and is now seriously putting talking-heads on television proposing letting the old die off like a controlled burn.

I can't get past how unbelievably dumb the notion is. Put out some of the most vulnerable people to "kickstart the economy" in the middle of a pandemic. What happened to American resilience? No, go die in the wilderness like an elderly person from a stone age culture; a sacrifice for the good of the tribe. smh

Hearing this knee-jerk economy panic from people who were accusing folks of panic over the virus in the first place. "We can't! We just can't! The economy can't take it! It's probably a good thing Trump will order the nation back to work!"

It will be interesting to see which country recovers more quickly.

you're the richest nation on earth. many smaller nations with smaller states, much smaller budgets, and lower levels of tech have got on top of this. taiwan did not fuck about. taiwan is not the united states. you can scratch up half a trillion dollars immediately for wall street but then can't afford adequate test kits, respirators, hospital infrastructure? this is a question of political will, not financial possibility.

now you're scrambling to talk about the levels of 'acceptable dead'. my my my. i hope all that freedom is worth it.

Tomorrow the US will have more cases than Italy, New York State more than Iran.

“In effect this is a wartime level of investment into our nation,” McConnell said.
Shame it can't normally be done in peacetime eh.

the royal family in the UK are kept in good health by a near-continual supply of organs and blood harvested from the young. normally altar boys from small provincial church of england parishes. the vicars never tell.

yay we are finally starting the money printer.

The bill is very generous. Most workers are getting $1200 up front. Unemployed people are getting an extra $600 a week (!) on top of their regular unemployment. From what I have heard unemployment is going to be extended to gig and contract workers now too. If this is all true, I am very happy with it.

overnight america has become a nordic social democracy. fix your health system and cancel student debt and you're really going to unleash all that human potential!

all it took was severe ineptitude and willing incompetence in the white house during a national crisis. amazing! marxist scholars will be analysing this for decades.

And then we have that infamous line from a Florida spring breaker, "if I get it, I get it" to paraphrase.

Maybe a little out of place due to the grim circumstances, but "21-year-old girl" startled me a bit. Then again, the article did mention an "18-year-old boy."

Maybe you're showing your newfound advanced age, or I'm too used to American articles blunting the impact with headlines like "18-year-old man shot to death by police."

Without things like suspension of mortgage payments, a $2k shot in the arm won't go very far for the regular old mom & pop op. How much of it will be taxable income? I've yet to read the entire thing.

Here's what’s in the $2 trillion coronavirus stimulus deal for businesses

it's obviously a rare case. but plenty of 20- and 30-somethings are being admitted to ICUs needing life-saving treatment. this is happening all across europe. the virus is no joke.

Dishes it out hardcore page one, but can't take it.

He must also, in some Fight Club induced delirium, think that I'm overjoyed at the prospect of his potentially having been exposed to the virus. I'm not. Jay, whatever moldy, rank cave or sewer den you're posting from, I hope you don't have to suffer through this virus. No sarcasm.

There has been a coronavirus outbreak aboard a deployed US Navy aircraft carrier
https://www.businessinsider.com/sailors … rus-2020-3

Sailors aboard the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt have tested positive for the coronavirus, the Navy said Tuesday, adding that this is a first for a deployed warship.

"Three cases of COVID-19 have been identified among personnel currently deployed and underway on the USS Theodore Roosevelt," acting Navy Secretary Thomas Modly said Tuesday. "These are our first three cases of COVID-19 on a ship that is deployed."

There are about 5,000 Navy personnel aboard the Nimitz-class carrier, Fox News, which first reported the cases, said. The sailors aboard the ship live in tight conditions in staterooms and berthing spaces.

The sailors who have tested positive for the virus have been quarantined and are being flown off the ship. Everyone that the three infected sailors had contact with is also under quarantined.

"This is an example of our ability to keep our ships deployed at sea even with active COVID-19 cases," Modly said, adding that the integrated naval force remains on watch.

"Our ships are sailing, our planes are flying, and training is still happening to safeguard our US national interests and those of all of our allies and partners around the world," the acting secretary said.

This marks the first time the coronavirus has been detected aboard a deployed warship, but the Navy has reported a number of cases among sailors assigned to pier-side ships. As of Sunday, there had been at least a dozen cases among sailors aboard warships at port in San Diego.

The Chinese will have learned they can survive a pandemic of this kind and the rest of the world can't.

It would be relatively easy to find or adapt a virus, quietly develop a vaccine then release the virus on the world.
This could be it for all we know.

Its pretty much a full time job.

I'm sure you would have been one of those people saying "but the Germans learned their lesson from WW1, they're good Europeans now, and Hitler is such a reasonable fellow, he's a socialist after all, the chance of them starting a war is practically nothing"

The Russians have figured out you can kill someone almost anonymously by spraying poison on a door handle or tea cup.

The Chinese have discovered the world can be crippled by a simple virus which they can deal with.

China is still an island nation with visions of domination, barely engaged with the world, except in trade in which they're whipping us all.

Its really not hard to see where this ends.

china has never been interested in 'visions of domination'. barely engaged with the world, yes, but never before in its history much interested in conquest.

where do you get this from? even the name of the country in their language bespeaks their lack of curiosity about the outside world.

New cases in China increase, all from abroad

Mainland China reported an increase in new confirmed coronavirus cases, all of which involved travellers arriving from abroad, the National Health Commission said on Thursday.

The commission said in a statement that a total of 67 new cases were reported as of end-Wednesday, up from 47 a day earlier, putting the total accumulated number of confirmed coronavirus cases to date at 81,285.

The commission also reported a total of 3,287 deaths at the end of Wednesday, up 6 from the previous day.
when are these foreign nations going to issue an apology to china for ruining their hard work? china should ban all incoming travel etc etc etc
