Did you even read the Vanity Fair article you linked? In it, there are still questions and unsureties. But people are still treating this sort of thing like an open-and-shut case every time there's a headline worded in a way which sort of supports their suspicions and opinions if you squint at it. Your own post up there, heavily intimated language massively open to a wide array of interpretations, bobbing in a literal sea of misinformation and clickbait.

Your frequently bizarre takes on covid-19 don't really make you the most reliable of covid-news aggregators, either.

Dilbert have you considered that if you ground all airlines worldwide for 2 months the virus can still spread over land?

Have you also considered the economic/societal consequences of stopping air travel entirely?

Not to say that sensible travel restrictions when a dangerous variant emerges aren't useful, but these are and should be temporary and do not suddenly eliminate a virus.
You tell the Germans they're stupid then.
germany is currently undergoing their biggest ever wave of infections. lmao. cancelling international travel is putting a band aid on an arterial wound. as i said before, the only thing that will make a meaningful difference is severe measures for the general population.

They're doing exactly what I wrote in the last paragraph. It's in the first sentence of the bbc article you linked: they want to slow the spread. They're not hermetically sealing the country.

The main 'unsurety' is still that we don't know the actual source of this virus since the Chinese have removed all the genetic information and obstructed a proper investigation.

It is somewhat relevant that the Wuhan lab was working on coronaviruses which had been modified for gain of function in research in an unsuitable lab sponsored by the NIH and driven by Fauci.

A wild coronavirus is one thing, a coronavirus modified to be more infectious and dangerous is another - it would have been helpful to have known that on day one, not for that to be concealed.

If the world had known this probably wasn't SARS-2, SARS-1 being bad enough, but a version artificially made more dangerous the response might have been quicker and more effective.

The fact is we don't know because no-one is admitting anything at this time.

Don't worry, the real answer was on Facebook all this time. Like a some Showtime special, the snobby scientists didn't pay attention to the down-to-earth, stay-at-home mom.

Dilbert there is no evidence whatsoever that the virus was manufactured in a lab. At the moment that hypothesis has about as much credence as a conspiracy theory.

Regardless the chinese govt has been uncooperative and it's unlikely we will ever find out where the first strain came from. If researchers are to be believed they mostly think it originated with animals.

But I don't think that changes anything in your mind; at the start of the pandemic you frequently made the point that Chinese people are disgusting and eat bats or smth.

There's ample evidence that the Wuhan lab was working with bat coronaviruses and doing gain of function research on coronaviruses sponsored by the US NIH.

Beyond that, yes, we don't know the actual origin of this thing.

We've had nearly one new case a day for 2 weeks. Still no masks required. No one has gotten very sick from it this time around it seems.

it's weird, whenever indians or some other minority breach lockdown rules, dilbert is here to report on it 12 hours a day.

a white australian takes it to tasmania and he's weirdly silent. ditto on the inter-state runners between SA and other states.

thank god for white people with their highly evolved sense of social cooperation.

erm, as if QAnon, proud boys standing tall, white supremacist gangs, anti-vaxxers and an attempted coup on the Capitol didn't make that already manifestly obvious?

a truly terrible analogy, but nevermind.

you have yourself been outspoken on the topic of vaccination mandates, forced medical treatment by government diktat, etc. and yet you're against the libertarian gospel of 'personal responsibility' now? where does wisdom actually fall for you? at some point you've either got to contend with science-denying anti-vaxxers who are a liability for everyone around them, especially their loved ones; or you've got to grant some leeway for personal choice, freedom, and indeed personal responsibility-taking.

traffic laws are there to shape, erm, traffic. you know, a situation in which some established order and norms is highly beneficial. it doesn't translate to people's own freedom of movement, freedom of assembly, issues of privacy, or the ethics of what they can do with their own bodies. these are much more highly contentious legal issues.

So Israel is now preparing a 4th jab for their elderly.

I expect vaccine willingness will drop the more rounds we get. I also see increasing cynicism over the pandemic response. I share the sense of a possibly neverending cycle of vaccination/booster, virus mutation and winter lockdown measures, followed by new vaccines/boosters.

what is the problem with another booster? why should compliance necessarily fall? i don't see those as 'givens' at all.

antiviral pills are here. they are being approved. they work -- including against omicron.

both moderna and astrazeneca have announced they are developing longer-lasting vaccines specifically for omicron, with the expectation it will be the dominant variant in no time and thus the best target.

we have better ever medication and better ever treatments. science has literally never been as well prepared for covid as it is now.

the winter crush on health systems is, of course, worrying. but you continuously playing wannabe-Cassandra over the effectiveness of vaccines is mystifying. soon people will literally be able to take a pill that will significantly protect them the worst effects of a coronavirus infection. you may as well say that people's compliance with ibuprofen and over-the-counter painkillers 'must drop' over time as people grow wary of taking a pill with a hangover or bad back. wtf. as soon as you, in a rich western nation, are able to buy a blister pack of 20x covid antiviral pills to keep in your bathroom medicine cabinet, you're going to stop being such a depressed little doomer baby about this thing, i can assure you.

if you want the never-ending cycle of winter mutation and vaccine rushes to stop, have a word with your own german- and EU-level leadership, who have protected the intellectual property of their drug companies over calls for global vaccination inequality. as i linked earlier, there are over 100 facilities/companies in the developing world who are currently capable of manufacturing their own vaccine supply. but they aren't being allowed. pretty rich for a relatively safe and insulated western person to moan about having to get vaccines for the foreseeable. 'how terrible! i have to keep going to get a free booster shot every 6 months when most of the world can't even access them!'

Only 60% of the Israeli population has come forward for their booster. That's a significant drop from the amount of people who've had 2 shots. Boosters have been available for a while now. I'm not basing this on makebelief.

Last I checked the pills' effectiveness wasn't as good as hoped and I've yet to see if it is as effective as needed in the vulnerable population. Also, over 60% of hospitalisations are unvaccinated. You expect them to take a covid pill instead if they don't even trust the vaccine?

I also wonder if the pill will remain as effective against omicron and other variants.

Considering 30+% of Israelis are hasidic and prefer gods will to vaccines and Israel has only achieved 65% double vaccination so far 60% coming forward for boosters is expected.

Whats sick is the number of parts of the world short of vaccines while the Israelis are on their fourth.

This is about Perrotet throwing out all social controls and letting people decide if they want to wear masks etc, nothing to do with vaccines.

I also don't see how you can't rationally conclude that the initial strategy has demonstrably failed in the face of a too quickly mutating virus and too much vaccine scepticism. A year ago the idea was that with 70-80% vaccinated society would be protected. Then delta came, and now all of Northern Europe is again in various stages of partial or full lockdown. Much like last year.

But sure, new vaccines and the covid pill will make 2023 different. Until, that is, the virus mutates unrecognisably again. Oh, but 2024 will be different for sure. Your optimism that we will science our way out is a belief not entirely validated by past and current events.
