Reactions as Harding claims nobody could have predicted Covid virus would mutate

Should we have held a superbowl? Some of the people complaining about it being a super spreader event seem a bit melodramatic.

Why have spectators during a raging pandemic? Weve had football all year with exactly 0 people in the audience. There was no reason to gather several thousand in a stadium.

Most of them were vaccinated and everyone had to wear a mask and sit a few feet apart. I can see both sides of the issue.

Solidarity seems to be a foreign word there tbh. 'I'm vaccinated so rules no longer apply to me'

Representative Ron Wright, a Texas Republican, passed away Sunday night after battling the coronavirus, making him the first member of Congress to die after contracting the virus.

Wright’s family and spokesperson confirmed his death Monday morning. He was 67 and had been battling cancer as well as the coronavirus when he died. He is survived by his wife Susan and three children.
I googled him and this old story was in his wiki article. I remembered seeing this video way back.

Exactly as I predicted "we're vaccinated, so back to normal"

There's still a 10-20% chance of getting infected, its not zero.

Also apparently its perfectly possible to close UK borders and thats what the govt advisors advised.

I guess my local school district has reopened. Superintendent proudly gave a very loud, emphatic speech on how it was necessary and on the wonderment of the students. Big accomplishment! Maybe he thought he thought the thin layer of mask was somehow muffling his voice in close proximity to the mic. Had to turn the volume down.

Meanwhile, Washington has not finished distributing vaccines yet. I'm not even on a timetable with an ETA. I can't help but think the district is unnecessarily jumping the gun. Getting out of the car before the driver stops sort of thing (I've yelled at passengers for that).

Funny you mentioned schools. I just saw this on Breitbart that made me angry.
Former teacher Rebecca Friedrichs had a blunt message this week for educators complaining about returning to their classrooms: Go back or get fired.

Friedrichs, a 28-year veteran of the classroom and former plaintiff in a lawsuit against her union over compulsory dues, told The Kyle Olson Show those who don’t want to work should make way for those “good teachers” who do.

Cunt, traitor, treacherous cunt. I am referring to the fact she sued her own union. Scrambled egg brain Republicans hurting fellow workers.

Also those comments on the article about "teachers not working" are stupid. Virtual learning is still work.

I always find it funny when conservative news finds the occasional fruity outlier from The Other Side to reinforce their views. Wasn't sure what point she was driving at, or if there was one. Anyway, going to skip on that comments section I think.

How is working remotely not work if you're a teacher, but work if you're an office worker? I've been in and out of several different office buildings for 15-ish years. I do a ton of work from home when I don't have to travel. A document turns out the same whether I do it in the comfort of my own dwelling or in a headache chamber with flickering lights and a weird stain on one of the ceiling panels. Tons of old face-to-face business that could have been emails are now thankfully emails. The only thing restricting me here is space for filing cabinets.

Someone also once tried to tell me that if I was working during a 1hr train commute, that's 'not work'. No, you can only be working if you're physically at your desk apparently.

I remember reading an article at the start of the pandemic that warned liberals that resentment of 'work from home' workers by blue collar (white) people  could be an electoral problem. That of course is assumes that everyone on a work from home arrangement is a pot head loser teacher like Macbeth or publisher of gay art books like Uzique who also votes Democrat/Labor.

But like most issues in America, it's identity politics/resentment almost all the way down with the right. I saw a facebook post from a guy I went to high school with complaining about teachers not telling him he could get into the trades though I remember my HS having trade classes.

Mine had some sort of weird program where a bunch of the kids who weren't college material went to the career center in an adjacent town. Dunno what that entailed. That said, it'd be way more useful to rehash the old thought of "I wish they taught us taxes in school" rather than some stupid shit like "how to start a business".

The trades argument is just a canard after all Millennials were had college stressed to them. Those same people would be complaining loudly if everyone did go into trades because you don't need 100 electricians in a town of 1,000.

Such a disingenuous argument - "teachers are Marxists, dont listen to them" but also "how come the teachers didn't tell me about LABOR".

I was going to make a comment about Catholic school parents expecting more from their kids than being a roofer but I remembered that a lot of the kids I grew up with that went to Catholic high school ended up in the trades anyway.

I just checked the prices for Catholic high schools in my area. The one attached to the local Catholic university has $19,000 a year tuition while the regular old Catholic high school is a reasonable $10,000 a year. All of the screw ups I know went to the $10,000 a year one. I guess the $10,000 difference is a big deal.

The frustrating part I've found is that a sizeable amount would opt for those jobs because of the pay alone. They want it to maximize their income, and to hell with the rest of belonging to a union. It's very strange at my work to see so many "union til I die" people who just vote straight R.

The post has somewhat of a point, though. Trade/shop availability differs from school to school (to my recollection, my HS didn't have shop; we had JROTC and football). None of my guidance counsellors talked about it.

If you want to get your lineage out of being dirt poor, trades might be a better way to do it than joining the army. At the same time as high school was a little rough, though. Definitely burnt the candle at both ends, do not recommend emerging from high school like you've exited the hyperbolic time chamber.

There is also a palpable, lingering disdain for trades that is probably helping nobody.

Probably pushed into a subject he wasn't enthusiastic about, I imagine.

Further in macs post just highlights toxic work ethic. Working yourself into an early grave as a virtue as opposed to the country working to improve life so that it isn't necessary.

On that note, I've seen people point out that many of the capitol raiders had financial troubles own, then mocked their expenses and the size of their families. But why shouldn't Americans have the opportunity to work reasonable schedules and be able to afford a place to live, food to eat, hobbies, and be able to support a family? Why do we have to pit the poor against the slightly less poor? Complete lack of focus from some of the commentary from the left, I think.

I do feel some disdain for the trades but I have the excuse of being a part of the trades at one point. This is probably my version of Jay hating on poor people but I can vouch for the fact that trade people have more resentment for white collar people than the other way around. I doubt most white collar workers even think of tradespeople while the tradesman do think negative of them. And in terms of not helping the situation, the Republicans elevating tradespeople in their hierarchy of roles definitely didn't do any good. Why do Republicans think blue collar workers in a mine are "real men" but call me a gay for being a teacher? I spend more time around adult women than those coal miners. Also, if you want to talk about palpable disdain you should see the squirming resentment I have seen from blue collar whites towards white collar and educated minorities. That last part is mostly something I have seen from men for what it is worth.

I think it's another one of the wedges driven between people. I got mocked for mentioning my grandpa once here, but he did talk about attending parties with people from a wider variety of walks of life than became common later on.
