it's weird you can then point out the hypocrisy/stupid thinking over the chinese flight ban. weren't you angry that china called your policy racist? hey look, two weeks later, it turns out it was racist and ineffectual. white people brought in it. well done dilbert. you'll learn eventually.
Most of these people have been identified and contained. Most Australian states have no in-community transmission to speak of, although thats likely about to change.

Were the Chinese racist in locking down Wuhan? Why were they so vociferous in accusing others of racism?
The world should have locked down China and everyone there whatever their nationality just as China locked down Wuhan, then we wouldn't be in this mess with no 'racism' involved. China's pushback may have doomed us all, their delays and secrecy certainly have.

i had to make the argument to my boss as well. I recommended 2 teams alternating weeks mon-thurs, with fri-sun as buffer between groups as a sort of sanitary measure. One manager for each team, the rest of the office works remotely.

Side note: MS Teams has such a terrible UI/UX. Utter fucking garbage.
i hate MS teams so much and my company switched to it about 6 months ago.

very bloated and buggy. i hate that it basically stays signed in on your local machine permanently, and if you force it to sign out and want to get back in ... oooh boy, hope you like authenticating every single morning.

hate their integrated skype so much. sure i've ranted about it here before. NO PUSH TO TALK. have fun in a conference call with 25 people with permanently open mics, unless they manually mute and unmute themselves by clicking the interface. stupid stupid stupid. ventrilo and teamspeak had basic P2T functionality in like 2003.

also all the extra kanban board-style stuff is otiose and redundant. being forced to interact with it is irritating.
Software developers' trend towards always-logged-on, or logged-on-by-default systems is obnoxious in general.

Who was responsible for choosing that combo? Teams doesn't even make the PC Mag top 10 for 2020. There are so many better collaborative solutions out there. TS or discord on top of one of the many superior project collab suites would be my choice. I imagine you could even integrate some collab feeds into a modded discord channel if you wanted.

Super annoying tit-for-tat political "skullduggery." Comes off as a woefully inane and inappropriate scuffle when the focus could be finding or contributing to a solution instead.

I remember when Webex was free, it worked pretty well.
Up to that point we had to email documents to each other like savages.
"Have you got document 1.3 dated yesterday? We're all on 1.4 dated today. Lets cancel this and hook up tomorrow when we're all on the same page"
Great days.

We also had four dedicated ISDN lines for the video-conference system, which was only installed at one site so couldn't be used for an awful lot. We used a laptop and webcam instead.
Those lines were maintained for about six years.

both sides pointing blame is totally pointless.

what matters is substantive action. who has taken it? we need results not political score keeping. you delight all too much in the sparring with china, indulging your pessimist view of the world, making our theyre turning everything always to their benefit. it’s adolescent. no, it’s neocon hawkish, that thing you mock elsewhere with regards to other foes.

The Chinese have 5,10,20,50,100 year plans, they are always working to their own benefit, we can barely scrape through the next quarter.

Locking down China and not worrying about being called racist by racists would have been a substantive step, didn't I say that months ago?
Now we need to lock down every other country in the world for months and deal with the deaths.

and it’s definitely china’s fault and no western government could possibly have mis-stepped or bungled whilst thinking of their own best interests or – lo! and behold! – turning it into a party-political issue for an electoral calculus. no. china. china china china.

I still have to play that document version game because people I work with still do it, they're intimidated by anything more complex than an email sign in screen, and get agitated when change is suggested. It's an endless frustration of mine trying to keep people on the same page when I'm dealing with guys who use Word in place of a spreadsheet, plug in numbers off of their external calculator, and save changes to an existing filename without altering version numbers.

I have to maintain a master document folder that nobody else can write to because of that sort of thing, keep asking that any alterations be CC'd back to me, and field endless complaints that they can't just meddle with source files or go back to a word processor from the 1980s.

Also, guys, maybe try closing some Word files, PDF documents, and browser tabs instead of running CCleaner every ten minutes for crying out loud.

I discovered my mother had 200+ open tabs on her ipad.
So thats why its a bit sluggish

The purchasing guy at my last job used to copy-paste from SAP to Excel to Word to Excel and back to SAP.
Todo lists were pen and paper.

Also:
"How the fuck have you got version 1.2 dated tomorrow? Jesus Christ"

the next 18 months are going to be fairly insane. we are really in new territory. new science, new technology, new international/global aspect.

applying and undoing and reapplying social distancing/quarantine to throttle the pressure on the hospital system sounds neat. too neat, methinks.

The hospital system will struggle regardless. Health care is struggling now. We could just not contest this thing and allow them to become really, really, REALLY overloaded, or try and take steps to encourage people to behaviors that will imperfectly mitigate some of the pressure. It's better than doing nothing at all.

WASHINGTON — Senator Richard M. Burr sold hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of stock in major companies last month, as President Trump and others in his party were still playing down the threat presented by the coronavirus outbreak and before the stock market’s precipitous plunge.

The stocks were sold in mid-February, days after Mr. Burr, Republican of North Carolina and the chairman of the Intelligence Committee, wrote an opinion piece for Fox News suggesting that the United States was “better prepared than ever before” to confront the virus.

Two weeks after the sales, Mr. Burr spoke at the Capitol Hill Club in Washington to a nonpartisan group called the Tar Heel Club, warning that the virus could soon cause a major disruption in the United States.
i am looking forward to watching america go to hell in a handcart. the chi-comms at least have pedigree.

Shortly before issuing his stay at home order, governor Gavin Newsom said 56% of California residents were expected to contract Covid-19 over the next eight weeks. It would require nearly 20,000 more hospital beds than the state could currently provide.
these goddamn liberals using the virus scare to their own ends!

Well there is no stopping it, I hope that by the time it makes a comeback from poorer regions that don't have the health system to cope enough resistance has been built up in the population to prevent another wave of deaths and quarantine measures.
