I think the comparisons to 9/11 are good at highlighting the hypocrisy of the people who wanted to turn the world upside over 3000 dead in NYC but couldn't care less about hundreds of thousands of premature deaths today because a large part of the fault for them is the Republican president.RTHKI wrote:

The 300,000 deaths we have had so far is really horrific when you consider that is millions of years of life experience lost. All of those one off stories of a 28 year old or 5 year old dying is a lifetime worth of friendships, loves, and general happiness erased. And circling back to politics, after the 2016 election mainstream and even liberal publications posted an endless stream of stories about the "forgotten people of Appalachia" or stories about how small town people in rural Idaho feel alienated and angry at big city liberalism and seeing half naked women at the Superbowl (???) or whatever other cultural grievances they have. Meanwhile the right is never going to acknowledge the anger built up among many at their hypocrisy and disinterest in doing anything regarding COVID. Then again 9/11 didn't make people investigate how our foreign policy instigated that either so maybe the comparisons aren't the worst thing in the world.

The problem is that people who have adopted covid denial, countermeasures refusal, etc. as a part of their political core beliefs won't care about however many 9-11s it represents or how faster we reached a certain figure than in x war. It doesn't matter how many WW2 documentaries they watch or how many 9-11 t-shirts they won.
You'd think that would be a quick way to their brain, but I guess it's more counterintuitive than that. I guess it's easy to say people should find another way to communicate the seriousness of this event, but I'm stumped over how to communicate something to someone who refuses to hear it.

I think there is a large amount of people who couldn't care less about anything that doesn't personally affect them. And the Republican party has made "Fuck you, got mine" a fundamental part of their identity. There's no way getting through to those people so what can you do?unnamednewbie13 wrote:

Staten Island Bar refused to close due to COVID. Bar declared themselves an autonomous zone. They lost their liquor license but kept open anyway. Police raided their bar. Angry Staten Island alcoholics protested at the bar.

Throwing a token out there, I think some of the blame could be apportioned to the CDC for its inconsistent message about the masks from the beginning on. Don't wear masks, now wear masks. I realize that was tied to ongoing research and the risk improper use of masks carries, but I don't think enough emphasis was put on those two last things.

Yeah that was one of the points I repeated early on too. Just that sadly, it's now ammo for anti-maskers even though there's a mountain of reasons for it.

Wrapping up a paper on the mental health challenges of special education during COVID. You guys probably understand this but I fear a lot of people will not accept that this is a mental health disaster for children that many will carry throughout the rest of their lives. Transgenerational trauma/holocaust syndrome is a thing. Pre-teens thinking they got their grandma killed because they wanted to enjoy their youth are going to carry that for the rest of their lives. Their kids will have to live with the pain of their parents in at least some way. I have a lot of mixed feelings about that.

5% of the population of the place I live have had the virus. That's probably underreporting by a lot. Considering the amount of deaths we have had compared to our case total, I am willing to accept that the spring NYC outbreak was bigger/worse than we thought and we just didn't have the testing capability. Or perhaps we have just gotten better at treating COVID people that states in the west can run up their case numbers without so many dropping dead.
NYT also reported that they found antibodies in blood samples they had from the first week of February. So officially we are at 5% confirmed infected in the U.S. Our real number might be 10% or more at this point. I still wouldn't suggest you tell grandma to go to a Trump rally.
