There's no great way to deal with death.

This young generation is fucked globally, the GFC delivered a lost decade for the young of southern europe, this is set to be another disastrous lost decade.
Meanwhile fat asian kids are driving Ferraris and Bentleys around my two-bit town on a Sunday afternoon.

the GFC delivered a lost decade to more than the young of southern europe. more severe there, sure, but income and wages dipped in real terms for everyone. they only reached pre-recession levels in like 2018.

there is no way to cut that fact as anything other than a disaster. the cost of living, the cost of education, and most crucially the cost of property kept gradually increasing through the same period. a decade of depressed wages has been a disaster for pretty much everyone, especially those early in life with zero assets or capital and those saddling themselves with a lifetime of debt.

and then people like jay argue until they’re blue in the face that inequality is good, that it doesn’t matter if a boss takes 275x the salary of their workers, that billionaires are a distraction and a point of envy ... you should have put $100,000 on the stock market in 2008 ... etc.

Cincinnati now requires a mask in public. My parents are now saying they won't visit. Like they ever go to the city everything is in the suburbs.

Meanwhile I'm tempted to go camping in Wisconsin later this month.

Phase III in NYC today. Seem to be doing ok here.

you still have 2-3 weeks to start seeing deaths in the 'uncontained' southern states. you must know the drill by now.

we are still in the early-to-medium game of covid-19. it isn't a wave that has crashed at its high watermark and receded back out to sea, as you kept portraying.

As parents nationwide wonder if it's safe to send kids back to day care, Texas is grappling with a surge of Covid-19 cases from child care centers.

At least 1,335 people have tested positive from child care facilities in Texas, the state's Department of Health and Human Services reported Monday, citing figures from Friday.

Of those infected, 894 were staff members and 441 were children. The cases came from 883 child care facilities that are open in the state, DHHS said.
I wonder if these 1300 people know its just a little flu. I wonder if the kids even know what a flu is.

Odds are, not one of those children will die.

Information on hospitalization status was available for 745 (29%) cases in children aged <18 years and 35,061 (31%) cases in adults aged 18–64 years. Among children with COVID-19, 147 (estimated range = 5.7%–20%) were reported to be hospitalized, with 15 (0.58%–2.0%) admitted to an ICU (Figure 2). Among adults aged 18–64 years, the percentages of patients who were hospitalized (10%–33%), including those admitted to an ICU (1.4%–4.5%), were higher. Children aged <1 year accounted for the highest percentage (15%–62%) of hospitalization among pediatric patients with COVID-19. Among 95 children aged <1 year with known hospitalization status, 59 (62%) were hospitalized, including five who were admitted to an ICU. The percentage of patients hospitalized among those aged 1–17 years was lower (estimated range = 4.1%–14%), with little variation among age groups (Figure 2)
If even 2% of the kids currently sick die that is still less almost 10 kids.

If more kids get sick, more kids will die. And more kids will get sick.

odds are without containment and quarantine, those 441 will infect someone who will die.

I am looking at the stats. Florida is the new New York as far as the virus goes which is fitting actually considering how the two states are very demographically similar.

But yeah, Florida is a disaster zone. At the rate they are going, they will reach NY's infection total in 20 days assuming they keep adding only 10,000 a day instead of 15 or 20. They need 8.5 times the amount of dead to catch up with NY but we already know Florida is under reporting and there is a lag. Assuming a very modest 1% of all cases result in death, every day 100 more souls are condemned. (10,000 x 0.01). I ran NJ and NY's numbers and they had a 9% infection to death rate. That would put the correct or expected death total in Florida at 18,000 instead of the 4,000 they are reporting.

Florida is much poorer than NY. Stunningly poorer. They don't have the resources to really handle things down there and the Federal government has moved onto new things like NASCAR. This is a bigger emergency than the northeast trouble.

After a record 112 days on a specialised life-support system, a South Korean Covid-19 patient is recovering from double lung transplant surgery, doctors say, in only the ninth such procedure worldwide since the coronavirus outbreak began.

The doctors who conducted the eight-hour surgery described her destroyed lungs as hard like rock, Reuters reports.

The 50-year-old woman was diagnosed with the disease and hospitalised in late February and then spent 16 weeks on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support, which involves circulating a patient’s blood through a machine that adds oxygen to red blood cells.

That’s the longest that any Covid-19 patient in the world has spent on ECMO support, her doctors said.

Various drugs such as the anti-malarial hydroxychloroquine, the HIV treatment Kaletra and steroids failed to stop her pulmonary fibrosis - scarring in the lungs - from worsening, said Dr Park Sung-hoon, professor of pulmonary and critical care medicine at Hallym University Sacred Heart Hospital.

That left few options other than a lung transplant.

“The probability of success in lung transplants on ECMO patients is 50%, and fortunately, our patient was well prepared before the surgery when we found the donor,” said Dr Kim Hyoung-soo, director of the hospital’s ECMO programme, who was in charge of the surgery.
2 pages ago i cited a famous broadway actor who passed away after having a leg amputated and a double lung transplant mooted. he was 41.[

this woman was 50.

yeah, fuck that.

scientists have been writing co-signed letters to governments and the WHO every week about one issue or another.

papers were published by chinese scientists in february establishing that covid spread as an aerosol inside buses, train compartments, etc. the guidance on avoiding indoor spaces is influenced in large part because of this.

yes, it's no accident that all these leaders who have trivialized its risks have ended up getting it. i wonder how many resources and effort trump's team are putting into keeping the moron free of it?

Bolsonaro has repeatedly downplayed the risks of Covid-19 and urged Brazil to get back to work to avoid a devastating economic crash but he is now the second member of his family suffering its effects.

The 80-year-old grandmother of Brazil’s first lady, Michelle Bolsonaro, was reportedly intubated on Sunday, after being admitted to hospital with coronavirus last Wednesday.

According to the G1 news website, Maria Aparecida Firmo Ferreira, who is reportedly estranged from the presidential clan, was found collapsed in the street by passersby and taken to a hospital in Ceilândia, a satellite city outside Brasília.

Bolsonaro’s response to the coronavirus has sparked a domestic and international outcry, with many directly blaming him for the high death toll. Brazil currently lacks a permanent health minister after two were forced from their jobs in less than a month after clashing with Bolsonaro over the pandemic.
fuck me, what a place.
