What is everyone's opinion on wearing masks?

A couple of months ago it seemed like the general scientific advice was that regular surgical masks weren't effective as a protective measure (although may help to stop the spread for people already infected) and only N95 masks are effective at preventing you get sick.

For the last few weeks there's been more advise that supports wearing masks but the UK government still haven't recommended them, not sure if this is to prevent shortages for front line staff or because wearing a mask badly could put you at increased risk.

My girlfriend is Korean and has absolutely insisted on wearing a mask when we're in public so I bought a load but probably 99% of the people I see don't have them on in the UK.

Am I being selfish for buying masks?

It is a cultural practice of East Asia that I was in favor of importing to the west even before this.

The mask can't hurt when it comes to spreading COVID. An issue with them is it gives people a false sense of safety.

I'm starting to hear that the primary transmission method appears to be through droplets, so a regular surgical mask might provide some protection. I don't think it's selfish at all. If anything, you're helping out your countrymen by not directly coughing on them if you end up sick.

They're required here. They don't do much for you if you're not sick, but if you are sick, they help to stop you from infecting other people. N95, bandana, whatever, it doesn't really matter, as long as you have something that prevents you from coughing or sneezing on other people and spraying your droplets.

If you can wear a mask effectively then great. That means putting it on and not touching it again until you've washed your hands and are ready to throw it away.

If you're going to spend all your time fiddling with it, lifting it to wipe away condensation, scratch your nose, take it off and put it on again ten times a day then don't bother.

Masks for urban dust filtration can be reused, for medical protection they can't easily, and you're more likely to pick up bugs on your hand and transfer them to your face.
If you're not going to be close to people for long periods then I'd say don't bother, if you're spending an hour on the tube then yes.

the US does literally nothing. Meanwhile I was temperature screened and had to go through a verbal questionnaire to go shopping for an ottoman.

Jay should just admit he loves this because it lets him make mean-spirited hand sanitizer jokes at the expense of pandemic risk to people's friends, family, and health.

Some places in my area are browse by appointment only, or contactless curbside pickup. Other places revised their storefront parking with labeled stalls and plentiful grids to account for employees bringing the stuff you want out to you. The atmosphere is tense, but I'm happy to say that I haven't had to run into any nonsense like someone intentionally coughing at other people or whining to employees about preventative measures.

This guy here complaining about having to walk down one-way aisles inside a whole department store, probably with more than 25 people at a time. Benefit of the doubt, though. Maybe it was just for the sake of the punchline.

the lancet: brazil must 'drastically change direction on covid-19'.

for 'brazil' you can basically also take it to mean, to a lesser degree, 'america'. trump and bolsonaro are shamefully alike in this "so what?" attitude.
https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanc … 3/fulltext

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic reached Latin America later than other continents. The first case recorded in Brazil was on Feb 25, 2020. But now, Brazil has the most cases and deaths in Latin America (105 222 cases and 7288 deaths as of May 4), and these are probably substantial underestimates. Even more worryingly, the doubling of the rate of deaths is estimated at only 5 days and a recent study by Imperial College (London, UK), which analysed the active transmission rate of COVID-19 in 48 countries, showed that Brazil is the country with the highest rate of transmission (R0 of 2·81). Large cities such as São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro are the main hotspots now but there are concerns and early signs that infections are moving inland into smaller cities with inadequate provisions of intensive care beds and ventilators. Yet, perhaps the biggest threat to Brazil's COVID-19 response is its president, Jair Bolsonaro.
meanwhile russia is now taking off at a frightening rate; it's the next 'hotspot' after europe. 1,000s of new infections per day. belarus just had a gathering of 200,000 people to celebrate VE day. recipe for disaster.

I'm quite certain everyone around Trump follows strict social distancing guidelines. I'd be surprised if he catches it.

i think a lot of people in trump's administration are on the anti-vaxx/global warming is a hoax spectrum. it wouldn't surprise me if he had a flat earther arranging his travel itinerary. they are not the brightest bunch and seem to think this virus will magically disappear, or is not a big deal.

the UK govt just announced some huge multi-billion £ plan to massively upscale cycling and public transport use in this country. they want to 'double' the amount of cycling by 2025. it seems like this pandemic is going to have some lasting changes on society. air pollution is now much more apparently a problem (london has posted death rates 5x other places in the country), as well as the need for pedestrians to have ample amounts of space to walk/jog around cities.

top uk scientists sign joint letter, protesting that the science of lockdown is rigorous and backed-up, not just the work of neil ferguson.

seemingly the government is trying to ease lockdown and gently undermine the science.

https://docs.google.com/document/u/1/d/ … TjRSYq/pub

In response to the COVID-19 epidemic, SAGE has gathered a large body of expertise across various fields relevant to epidemic response. The consensus of this committee is used as the scientific advice to the government and helps inform the decision making process. At the time of writing, SAGE lists 56 participants, and receives inputs from a much larger number of advisors through dedicated sub-committees. The sub-committee focusing on modelling has so far included 44 contributors, most of whom are independent academic researchers, who themselves represent a large number of groups throughout the country and their ongoing work. Hence, any scientific advice to the UK government, including advice which preceded the lockdown is the result of the work of hundreds of researchers throughout the UK. The government may then take this advice, as well as a number of other considerations, into account when making decisions.

The large body of scientific evidence available to UK scientific committees is discussed, debated, and summarised in consensus statements. Contributing research teams also publish regular reports, data, code and scientific papers providing more details and transparency on their analyses. In early March 2020, the emerging consensus amongst scientists involved in this country-wide consultation was that SARS-CoV-2 was circulating widely in the UK, it was capable of causing substantial hospitalisations and fatalities, and that in the absence of drastic social distancing measures, the healthcare system would rapidly become overwhelmed in the same way that it had been in Northern Italy at the time. Although new studies and data have since emerged, this consensus has not changed.

Throughout this epidemic, UK-based scientists have provided independent evidence and analysis to decision makers, both in the UK and internationally. This is a huge ongoing effort  by a large community working collaboratively to constantly reassess data, refine methodology, challenge assumptions, and compare and debate results in order to reach a scientifically sound consensus. They are in turn supported by a vast network of researchers and health agencies reporting data from hospitals, laboratories, care homes and communities across the world.
so it seems that for the national review and jay to be right, the entire scientific community, and many other researchers in other adjacent disciplines, have to be wrong.

let's wait and see. america is testing the hypothesis.

What a dummy. I bet the cops gave her plenty of chance to go home before the arrest. You should never bring a kid to a protest. You should never even bother going to protest.

My biggest question after watching that is why the police officers' pants are darker coloured in the crotch, making it look like they pissed themselves? Most noticeable in the last 20 seconds with the officer looking straight at the camera.
