Seeing all of the young people hanging in the warm sun of the park was nice though it also made me a little sad to not be young anymore.

Mac what do you think of MTG sending hired goons after someone

I barely follow anything MTG anymore. I googled what you mentioned though. The owners of MTG wouldn't need to send the goon squad to track down product if they didn't release so many new sets.

https://external-preview.redd.it/2jycrS9q1b-8BxJUJq2DMyt7lrvY1CAQGTpm4zjydeo.jpg?width=640&crop=smart&auto=webp&s=25e88e3d9e65439c7228b0603e0d834ab0154875

Too many sets for the player base to keep track of or care. They are also doing a lot more reprints of expensive cards to sell new set boxes. While that makes the game more accessible it also tanks the value of collector's collections tank. After seeing the value of their collection shrink, big spenders like me stop engaging.

"Hasbro is 'killing its golden goose' by destroying the long-term value of Magic: The Gathering, BofA says in scathing downgrade call"

https://markets.businessinsider.com/new … on-2022-11

"Card prices are falling, game stores are losing money, collectors are liquidating and large retailers are cutting orders," BofA said.

They were selling year old boxes of MTG card for like $80 on Amazon. Usually MSRP is about $100. I checked the prices of the individual cards and there wasn't a single one worth more than $3. The expected value of cards are below the prices of boxes. That is not the way the boxes should operate.

Won't the old stuff still be worth something? First edition books still have value even after a bajillion reprints.

There is something called the "Reserve List." They are cards that MTG promised never to reprint. Most are from the "Alpha" and "Beta" first editions. Most of those are still worth a lot of money and the huge sums you hear about people paying are for those cards alone. Check the link below and guess which cards have been promised to never be reprinted and which ones haven't.

https://www.cardkingdom.com/mtg/alpha

People still collect or still used to collect cards that are not on the "reserve list." But since the owners of MTG decided to start reprinting valuable cards like crazy in order to sell boxes, people stop taking an interest in buying cards since anything you own will get reprinted and with a fancy new art that will make your OG version worthless. Example:

This card was worth a little more than $99 a year and a half ago.

https://www.cardkingdom.com/mtg/eternal … iric-tutor

It was reprinted 3 times within the last year and a half though. Same card from the three recent print runs:

https://www.cardkingdom.com/mtg/command … iric-tutor

https://www.cardkingdom.com/mtg/dominar … etro-frame

https://www.cardkingdom.com/mtg/dominar … iric-tutor

To make it all worse...two of the times it was reprinted, they also printed special art versions which further lowered the value of the originals. Special art of the same card from the same reprinting.

https://www.cardkingdom.com/mtg/dominar … borderless

https://www.cardkingdom.com/mtg/command … tended-art

....

So who do you think someone who bought the card for $99 feels?

Newbie wrote:

That's true. But what is taking place is that the owners of MTG are knowingly driving down the value of their collectables on the secondary market to juice the sales of booster boxes today. This worries Bank of America who downgraded the stock because it is causing people who used to buy boxes to chase rare cards to not do so anymore since the value of those rare cards will plummet not far long after you get it. Gone are the days where you have a binder full of rare and expensive cards. Anything with value will be used to juice sales. Another example:

This website shows you a card's price history.

This card topped off at $45 in August '22.
https://www.mtggoldfish.com/price/New+P … ator#paper

It was rarely ever reprinted. It had a recent printing a month ago and the value of the card plummeted to $18. Look at the version and variant page too.

https://www.cardkingdom.com/catalog/view?filter[search]=mtg_advanced&filter[name]=Phyrexian%20Obliterator

4 out of 7 variants of this card came from the set from last month. It was a rare card. But since they reprinted it into the ground, the SpEcIaL eDitIoN version is only $9.99

https://www.cardkingdom.com/mtg/phyrexi … less-ichor

And nobody wants the special edition variant either since they will reprint it someday too. Why spend $9.99 when you can get it for $5 when they reprint it soon?

So a company broke a promise? Very surprising! /s

I'm not going to rag on you for collecting them for collection's and nostalgia's sake. Collectibles can still be a fine investment, but there's always a risk. As someone who isn't a corporate lawyer, I don't know what the MTG people can be held accountable for, if anything. Companies can literally manslaughter small towns and nobody goes to jail.

It sounded like needless scarcity anyway. Imagine the first edition of Lord of the Rings being the only edition for 50 years, for no particular reason.

The reserve list is still around. They have kept to their word about that. I believe it is because it allows them to get headlines in the news like "Magic the Gathering card sells for record $200,000." Everything else is open game for reprinting. The owners of MTG have only recently went crazy with the new sets and reprinting.

WotC owns MtG. It is speculated that the company that owns WotC, Hasbro, has been coming down on their subsidiary to be more profitable since everything else in their portfolio is in decline. Same thing will happen when Gabe sells Steam to Amazon.

"We are reducing the number of Steam sale events in order to provide customers better buying opportunities with a less frequent sale schedules."
Hmm, that might actually be a good thing though.

Speaking of collectables...

One of my students brought in a 1940 Italian coin. The student didn't know what it is or remember how they got it. They have a Buffalo nickel too. They had all of their coins wrapped in a clothe towel. I bought them a pack of collectable coin holders.

If steam is bought by anyone, please let it be by a company who can fix its slow, clunky interface. Amazon has a slow, clunky interface. Do you look forward to every action in your steam cart taking two minutes to compute?

I feel like you've mentioned slowness with Steam before. I've never had issues with it. It doesn't seem any faster or slower than any gateway app? I've used on my PC, on the Steam app on my samsung, and used to use (and still have) a physical Steam Link box. The only issue I had was connecting to steam via the Steam Link, but once I was connected, it was never slow.

That's an interesting way to put it. But it is worse than that. Every other month a new set is released. There are three variants of the packs you can buy: Draft Booster (the one you grew up with), Collector's Booster (For Collector's. Released 2020) and Set Boosters (Cheaper Collector Version. Released 2021)

Different versions of boxes have different art styles. You pay more for "the collectable" card box. But as I said before, nobody trusts WotC to not run down the value of their own cards. Also, people are so confused by the different variants that nobody really knows what to buy.

Example: this is the second to last set released in March. A new set is about to or has been released since. These are the three versions of the box you can buy.

https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/71-Lz16m3xL.jpg

https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/71yIOjSBixL.jpg

https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/81tsU2HUoDL.jpg

They had the audacity to make charts for Amazon about what is included in each box.

Probably.

I'm sorry, let me rephrase that. Steam has a slow, clunky interface when it acts up. Amazon has an even slower, clunkier interface when it acts up. Some aspects of both platforms run fine.

For amazon, the cart and the wishlist are horrible to deal with, to say nothing of its aggregation and obfuscation of misleading products (made worse by link recycling). rehash follows: Spoiler (highlight to read):
I also feel like it could have a better catalog and sorting system for all your purchases. Last I checked, they limit the amount of orders you can "archive." Why? If I want to find out if I ordered a book from them with a title I don't quite remember, why do I have to scroll through 50 months of various other sundries? Let me sort by item type? It's not like I checked recently, so maybe they fixed all that. Not holding my breath.

They also removed one of the pickup lockers at a nearby supermarket, and replaced it with an over-the-counter pickup (again, why). No. Thanks. I can drive to a closer drug store if I want to do that. In-store locker still available down the road from that, so whatever. It's not that I'm particularly worried about porch pirates (although there is activity), I just don't want my blu-rays mistakenly delivered to neighbors as sometimes happened. Not really related to how bad the website is, but whatever.

For the steam platform, I have some technical issues with chat, the store can be slow to respond, and managing screenshots is unworkable unless I do so from a web browser. The in-game overlay can sometimes chug a bit (and occasionally crash) as well, even when I have resources available. Overall, feels more feature-creeped and roughly chained together than it does the streamlined and optimized package it should be after nearly 20 years, and with so many games requiring it open to even launch.

As much as I hate to defend EA, Origin just works for me. Granted, it's not as bulked up on features, but I never get stuck in endless preparing to launch loops, or the occasional infinite update when I launch it. Feels more like using a browser than waiting for a dinosaur's brain to communicate with its tail.
