Failed my polygraph exam to be a police officer. I am not sure if I really did or not though.

I walk into a room with one man and he introduces himself as the polygraph examiner. We discuss some of our background, age, family, job, schools etc. He then starts a long speech on integrity and how important it is to being a police officer. Finally, we go over a questionnaire where he ask me if I have anyone who will say something negative about me, have I ever committed any of a list of serious crimes, done any of a series of drugs, and other reckless behavior. Also ties to criminal organizations, foreign governments, terrorist etc. Or cheating in college. I admit to nothing and say no to everything.

He hooks me up to a laptop and then starts to ask me questions. The questions are: Have you ever said anything bad about a supervisor, Did you lie on your forms, Do you have integrity, Would anyone say you are not trustworthy? But he ask the same few questions in a different order multiple times for 4 different sets of exams.

At the end I leave and he looks over everything and I came back and he says "I looked over your sheets and some troubling things came up". "You seem to have something bothering you" "Is there anything you want to tell me about that may be troubling you and showing up on the exam"? He ask the question a few times and we go over some definitions of what a crime against a person is, what a crime against property is, and drugs. He then tells me how he partied in college as well as the times he had to do a test and how he told the truth and everything worked out. And how I should tell the truth because if you tell someone a lie they will never trust you and integrity is important and will get you far in life. I admit to nothing.

He then tells me he went over my sheets and he is 100% sure I was trying to cheat the machine. That there was no way in his 25 years of experience he could ever be wrong about trying to cheat the machine. And then he tries to get me to admit to trying to cheat the machine because I failed it so bad that he could use it as a demonstration as to how bad I failed. I admit to nothing.

Finally, he says that either there was something that was bothering me that screwed with the test that I failed or I cheated on it. Either one of those two things, which do I want to admit to? I admit nothing. He says I failed and that was the end of the process for the job.




Why I think I may not have actually failed: He said at the end he is putting in that I failed even though he really likes me as a person but that the test, audio, and video would go to a higher office that might overrule him and accept me. And if that is so, I would get a letter in the mail in 2-4 weeks that will tell me the next step to the job. But I totally failed. I have a co-worker's whose son took the same test for the same people and was 100% honest about it. At the end they said he failed and that he cheated on it. They eventually talk him into admitting that he googled how to cheat the test but didn't. They tell him he could take the test a second time if he signed off on a sheet saying that he failed the exam. He signed it and they told him there would be no second exam and told him to leave. He didn't tell me to sign anything on the way out or offer to let me do a second test. I think it is possible that I passed the test to a reasonable degree and they told me I failed and cheated in order to get me to admit to something illegal or cheating on the test. But they couldn't get me to admit to anything and since they didn't make me sign anything on the way out or offer to do the test a second time, I may get a letter in the mail in a few weeks that says I actually passed on review.

Or it was just blatantly obvious that you were lying...
Should have just told the truth to begin with.

I do know what that is? He gave me a sheet of paper and explained what the definition of it was in case I was confused and would confess something.
