case was settled under contract law under doctrine of estoppel.
tldr verwayen got injured on a naval vessel (HMAS Melbourne accident), gov induced him to believe compensation scheme limitation was extended, gov says loljk and renegs, courts used doctrine of estoppal to award verwayen damages. so yeah, contract law did solve this guys shit.
